saying bama is currently elite because of (distant) past titles is like calling egypt a modern super power because of the pyramids.

No, b/c unlike Egypt, Bama was 12-2 last year, undeafeted so far this year, has a great coach, and has been recruiting lights out.

Sounds like you're making up your own criteria of determining what an elite program is.

But you have the official "criteria"? I think we're all pretty much going with our own opinion. But if some sort of recent championship isn't in there somewhere...I'm having problems with that team's consideration.

Bama's program has a long history, but as of the past few years (say the last 5-10), they cannot be considered an elite program because of their less than stellar records.

It would be like saying Army is an elite program due to their storied history - but no one would consider them one today. Granted Bama seems to be on the way back, but they need to sustain it for a few more years and actually win something (SEC CG, NC, BCS Bowl, etc.)

No, b/c Bama is 20-2 dating to last year, has great recruiting, and a top coach. Gotta give the gumps some credit.

I would have to say there is a difference in being a storied program and then an elite program. I do agree that Bama should win a couple of SEC titles and at least the BCS once, throw in a two or three more 9 or 10 win seasons. That would put them up even more in my book.

a. and finished the season on 2 losses, with no conf. championship and no bowl win
b. great recruiting does not make you a great team automaticially
c. top coaches win championships at their school...he has not
d. credit does not equal elite. but I will give them credit for being back in the conversation.

but yet Arkansas can beat anyone of those schools, and has. I would say only Fla, and LSU has been at an elite level for awhile with Bama soon to be joining them.

Hmmmmm...current SEC elite? Fla. LSU Bama (but they need to win more than the west very soon)...Ga is dropping from the conversation, UT isn't elite.

Ah well. I think they are already there. You think they are close. It's the way it goes.

UGA having yet to win the BCS and hasn't been back to ATL for a while can't be considered elite. UT??? Honestly, not for the past four years! I agree with LSU, Bama, and UF for now.
