i certainly agree that you should be able stand whenever you want....but i don't think it has anything to do with showing your emotions...you can cheer just as loud from a sitting position...hell, you can even make more noise by stomping your feet while sitting in your seat...some are able to control their nervous energy better than others and remain seated...neither should be ridiculed.

Except of course for how much it means to the players.
What gets me is when the players are on the field waving their hands, pretty much asking for the support of the crowd and still there are whole sections with people sitting on their hands. I saw it at the St. Charles/John Curtis high school game last week. It just seems like it's a one way street for some fans - wanting entertainment without giving the support back.
For LSU, all you have to do is listen to pretty much any recruit that's ever gone to a game, any ex players, coaches, etc. to see how much the crowd support impacts their experience of playing ball here. It's something they'll likely carry with them the rest of their lives. Heck, you can even look at the quotes from opponents.

Don't know what the actual rules are for this. At the Oregon State game in 2004 I had a similar incident.
Guy behind me told me that I was going to sit down because his wife couldn't see. Wrong tone. I was pretty intoxicated, so like a tough guy I proceeded to tell the guy that the only way I was sitting down is if he fricking made me. He then proceeded to tell me he would go get the usher. I told him to go right on ahead. He did, and I was escorted out.
Pretty fricked up iyam. Now I'd rather just tailgate when I can, and watch the game from home. Tired of dealing with pussy bullshite like that.

I am torn on this issue. I get up and yell all the time. Stand during 3rd downs.......sometimes entire series........a few times for entire quarters. Going to night games at Tiger stadium is sometimes an endurance challenge. Get there early in the day, stay through the game (on your feet most of the day). And in many cases drive several hours home. Believe me, im not whinning here. If you arent completely drained at the end of the game, you probably didnt have as much fun as I did.
Having said that, there is always two guys in front of you that forgets to sit back down IMO. I subscribe to letting the in-game situation dictate this unspoken rule. I think most people have enough common sense to know when it is expected to get on your feet and go nuts. Like 3rd downs, change of momentum series, end of game drives, TD's ect ect.
You can yell just as loud from your seat. And I think by standing and going bonkers situationally, it draws a sharper and more impactfull distinction. IMO.

I was told the same thing by a couple sitting behind me in the Superdome for the '07 National Championship game. They told me they would not stand for me "standing" and they would call security.
I simply turned to them and said, "you'll be alright" and continued standing. At least until I drank too much and had to sit down during those damn TV timeouts...

If you are not in the student section, standing on key plays is acceptable. Standing the whole game isn't. I can do either, some people can't and you basically take their view of the game away. Doesn't hurt to stop and think how it affects others who may not be able to stand all game, and can't see when you do.

I believe there is a rule now people can make you sit if they grab a marshal, saw it done last year.

this subject comes up a lot. what the hell is going on? when someone in front of me stands up, my reaction is automatic; i simply stand up. i didn't come to an LSU game to sit on my arse for three hours. i'm 60 yrs old and i can stand awhile. besides, you can sit during time outs and halftime and sit for a long time in the car leaving the game. i never remember anyone telling me to sit down, if and when they do i'm just going to ignore them. i have a right to stand up; they better stand too if they want to see the damn game. it's a frickin' FOOTBALL GAME!

man you must be real fun to be with. there is no rule prohibiting standing; some people get excited and want to stand. i see nothing wrong with that at a football game. now, a play, symphony performace or the opera; yea, i got a problem with it. standing does not hurt you body. if it does, stay home and let someone with enthusiasm have your ticket.

Ahhh actually there somewhat is
Standing During Games
Policy: LSU encourages fans to be courteous of other fans in choosing to stand during games. Spontaneous reaction to plays or significant events is expected and encouraged. Continued standing during game action when other fans are sitting is discouraged and will be addressed by game marshals if complaints from other fans are reasonable and continuous.
Reason: Common courtesy dictates that fans should not block the view of other fans who are seated during game action.

Everyone should be standing and yelling loudly when the opponent is on 3rd down trying to call the play and at the line of scrimmage.
Also I think everyone should be up on key series late in the game for all plays.
Anyone that wants to sit down and quietly watch a game doesn't need to be going there or needs to get Stadium Club or suite tickets.

this is pregame.who watches the boring pre game stuff?
and i mean there were only like 20 people in our section

After attending games for over forty years, you learn when to stand and when to sit. It depends on your section. Some tend to stand more than others.
The proper etiquette is to get a feel for those around you. If you and your partner are the only ones standing, you can yell stooped over or sit down. There are times when everyone around you is standing when you know it is ok.
Remember, there are some who come to games that are old or have injuries you can't see, but make every effort to attend the game. For those, I have sympathy when the only two people standing within the forty fans around him, block their view.
So instead of a glare, look around. If you are the only one standing, then have a seat young man. As you get older, you will get wiser.

I paid the same money as they did to attend the game, therefore I have the same right to either sit or stand as I deem appropriate.
As someone else said, this is a football game not the symphony. If you can't see, stand up too.
Let me add that last game I stood up for a lot of it but noticed no one else in our section was standing so I sat down. However, when Auburn was inside our 20 and STILL no one was standing to cheer it kinda ticked me off. If there is ever a time to stand up and cheer wouldn't it be when the other team is inside your 20, trying to score?
Tiger Stadium is losing it. I hate to say it but it's true.

Not everyone can, for a whole game. I try to have a bit of understanding mixed in with my enthusiasm. There isn't a single stadium in the nation where all people stand all the time.

There's alot of difference between a shapely good looking woman standing in front of you and a big ole fat man that takes up the whole field when he stands. In other words it depends on the situation.

I agree. So I guess it is situation dependent.
