I was hopeful after the Miami, Auburn and UGA games that Burrow could recognize defenses and audible into an effective play. I witnessed a few obvious audibles by Burrow in the early part of the season. But it seems that last part of the season either Burrow is not recognizing defensive alignments fast enough to audible, he is audibling into the wrong play, or the coaches are not allowing him to audible.

For example, in many 2nd/3rd and short situations during the aTm game Burrow should have audibled to himself for a QB sneak to gain an easy 2 yards for a first down. In those situations the aTm tackles did not line up over Cushenberry and Burrow could have easily follow Cushenberry to the aTm LB level for a nice first down pick up. I have no idea why Burrow did not audible to himself for a QB sneak on those plays. Instead the LSU defense ran right into the waiting arms of the aTm run blitz.

I don't know if this is lack of awareness or hubris. The LSU offense needs to take advantage of the easy things. Stop running into brick walls.

No I don’t think they look for favorable matchups. Doubt they can recognize them.

Honestly, I'm not sure. You'd think that Ensminger would look for ways to take advantage of favorable personnel mismatches and/or call plays that exploit an opponent's weaknesses. Isn't that basic OC 101 stuff?

This assumes he has the leeway to audible to a QB sneak.

It’s a lot easier read to run one way to another’s

That’s numbers.

It’s differnet to call an audible from a HB run up the middle to a QB sneak for 2 yards.

Twice during a 2nd and short the aTm defensive tackles were not lined up over Cushenberry and I said to myself, "just QB sneak this and take what they are giving you." Geez, it is so frustrating. I realize I have a different vantage point than Burrow and maybe Burrow thought that the aTm middle LB would crash down but Coach E had to have seen the weak spot in the aTm defense on those short yardage situations. So disappointing.

I don't know if you've noticed but every quarterback that comes through LSU comes in with a high rating and then either stays the same or continually regreses. Every Juco or transfer quarterback that steps in comes in looking pretty good and then continually regresses to what I call the 'LSU QB Median'.

LSU can't develop a raw quarterback talent and ruins any that are already developed. It's an LSU offensive culture problem and the most common denominator have been the head coaches. Miles and Orgeron. Two baws cut from the same cloth.

On 2nd and short you aren’t playing for the first down.

You’re trying to get more because you have 1-2 more plays to play for a couple of yards.

I strongly Doubt there is any look that a QB sneak would be an allowed audible on 2nd and short.

Less Smiles used to say things like, "we're going to do what we do best regardless of what the opponents doing." 'Enforcing your will', 'executing' that kind of hard headed, macho bullshite. Orgeron seems to be the same kind of person.

we don't make any in game changes nor halftime changes. He runs the script as written, just like CLM.

The problem with this mindset is you become entirely too predictable. Opposing defenses look a film and Coach O's tendencies pop out like a sore thumb. So easy to stop.

If that is the case they should have play-actioned. That would have been a better call than running into the teeth of the aTm defense, who has the best run D in the SEC.

that old mentality used to work in the days when some schools would get much bigger players .. now there are big players everywhere.

I thought Miles took his foot off the gas in 2nd halves?
You need to make up your mind.

Also coaches only run about 20- 30 "scripted plays" and all else is DnD related.

That's what I feel has made Saban a great coach, which he was not while at LSU. Very good-yes, not great.

After Saban went to Miami and basically saw the match ups from a different perspective, he has evolved in to a great coach. I feel he plans to exploit weaknesses and not just a game plan as it were.
