re: Does LSU have 5 national championships since 2003 if Saban stays in the NFL?

quote:Bama was the exact reason why Miles wasn't seen as a #3 at worst coach in the country. Think about the recruiting that Saban did that stole away LSU's stranglehold in the region. Trent Richardson nor Eddie Lacy go to Bama. They don't get the Kouandjio brothers or Cyrus Jones. They don't get De'Preist or Pettway or Dial. They don't get Clinton-Dix either. They don't get Landon Collins, Amari Cooper or Kenyan Drake.
No. Miles would have won two, giving us three for the era. He would have become complacent even faster had he won that 2011 championship. I think three would have been it, unless he picked up another in 2013/14, but I doubt it.
It would have been hard to fire a two-natty coach, so I think the program would have relapsed into 8-4 seasons, and Miles would have hung on until about covid time.
Those are just some players not from Alabama from 2009-2011 that made up those 3 national championships in that 4 year span. A lot of those guys were from Florida and Maryland. Hell, some of those elite Alabama players likely end up at Auburn who won a title in 2010.
LSU would have won in 2011 and had a shot of winning in 2012 if they beat UGA in the SECCG. At that point, Miles would be considered a modern day king of CFB. Think of that 2013 team with more recruits on it that wanted to play for a 3 time national champ? In 2013, I think we have a much better defense getting top recruits because of how good we were. LSU should have beaten UGA, we did beat Auburn, and we would have beaten a Saban less Bama. We lost vs Ole Miss with Mett being way out of character. I'm taking a liberty here and saying even with the loss vs Ole Miss, we don't have the same Mett injury vs Arkansas. LSU beats Mizzu in the SECCG and has a chance of a 3 peat if they beat FSU.

Easy answer: no. But we would have a total of 3 for sure. That is with 2011 season, 2007 and 2019.

quote:LSU would have had Eddie Lacy and Jeremy Hill as a 1-2 punch. Lacy ran for 180 yards and 2 TDs at 9 yards per carry vs UGA that year. Jeremy Hill was a beast. When be got going he had 3 straight 100+ 1TD+ yard games vs teams that finished 1, 5, and 8th in the final AP rankings. In the bowl game he had over 100 yards and 2 TDs vs a team that finished 11th. He played 4 ranked teams, and had 100+ yards and at least 1 TD in all of them.
Lost in the 2012 talk is that it's not a given LSU beats Georgia in the SECCG. Georgia should have beaten Alabama and was playing great. LSU wasn't playing very well down the stretch. Could it have been an Alabama loss hangover? Probably, but from what we have to go by from what we saw on the field.. Georgia was the better team at the end of November.
Lacy and Hill would have ran over UGA.

If Saban stayed in the NFL, we know this: Alabama wouldn't have won six.
Even with Saban, if they hadn't given Alabama a do-over in the 2011 season, LSU would have four national championships since 2003, and Alabama would have five.
5-4....would people have been talking differently about LSU over the years?
