I'd have to know more about the other defensive backfields in college football next year to be able to get an idea of how well we compare

If JL keeps spotting points to the opposing defenses it's going to be hard to keep up statistically.

The talent is there, but playing 10 yards off the ball will not allow the talent to flurish.

We could really use some help at LB. We need a stud to shut down the middle a la Bradie James. I've got high hopes for Minter.

I don't think ANYONE knows. Outside of the Bama game, they have really looked bad. The question is how much of it is the players and how much is the coaches? Leaving WR's wide open is definitely not a GOOD sign of having a great defensive backfield.
I don't really think LSU's defense has been anything special ever since the 3rd or 4th game of last year. Very undisciplined. What was funny was how last year EVERYONE commented about all the penalties of the team and Miles said after every game it would improve and blah, blah, blah. It NEVER did and we found ways to win in spite of it so everyone accepted it. Some fans even took solace in the fact that previous NC's had been some of the most penalized teams.
I think that Miles knows completely NOTHING about defense and that without a tough, hard-nosed, proven DC we will be mediocre at best. Talent alone will not cut it against other talented teams that are well coached. If it is 1 side of the ball that is VERY well coached in the SEC, it's DEFENSE.

The most important part of playing defense is being able to execute. Against the spread, read type offense, you have to have all three parts working.
The dl needs to penetrate to force the offense, the lbs need to fill gaps to hold the line and thirdly you must be able to play man coverage.
Maybe it has been hard for the last two reasons or all three combined.
Most of the time our line gets pressure. The lbs seem to miss gaps for differing reasons. The dbs on occasion blow coverage by letting receivers go free.
I have not watched everyplay so it is hard to tell if we are playing man all the time in regard to the offense.
All I do know is you need all of these. Hopefully, with more experience and playing games the dbs will be much more adept at man coverage next year.
