did randall gay and/or devery henderson win a state football championship as well? if so, that's just even more amazing
Gay definitely did not win a high school championship, but I'm not sure about Devery.

Both grew up, went to Louisiana High Schools, won LSU's first title in almost 50 years and participated in (may win) Louisiana's only major professional championship.
That's about as probable as that Japanese guy that died last week. He was in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the day the bombs were dropped on them.

quote:No, but you have to weigh how much they contributed. Example, Duece will get a super bowl ring if the saints win. I was referencing Gay who was a backup in college and has been a backup in the NFL and will probably never be a starter. He may have started a few games, but only because the starters were injured. I wish the guy has a lot of success, but I don't agree with the title bestowed upon him in this thread.
CWS > Super Bowl, obviously

Gay started in the Super Bowl as a rookie.

You just jealous because it is about something positive and not negative. It is about something that not too many athletes in any sport has done in their lives. So give it up and stop your stupidity and be positive for a change.
Good thread!

Seriously, though, I was thinking about that during the NFC Championship game and I'm glad you worded it like you did, 'cause I know I'd embarrass myself trying. Good thread.

Stupid comment. He led the Patriots in tackles while chasing Terell Owens all over the field in their Super Bowl win. He has multiple Super Bowl rings and is back for another. Also was a contributor to a great "team defense" in a National Championship. Doubt that the Pats and the Saints would have signed him to multi-million dollar contracts if he was merely a career back up.

And Devery has an ESPY!!! Man was he nervous accepting that award on behalf of LSU.
Devery had 3 or 4 other offers from other teams after last season. He chose to play for less and stay with Saints (4 yr contract extension I believe). That was a very good move on his part. Devery was a very important player on the 2003 team and he is a key part to the Saints offense. And he has done much better than most people expected. It goes to show what staying humble and hard work will do.
Randall Gay was more of a situation guy in college as he is in the pros. But he has had a very nice career. He is much more effective as a nickle back. How he plays against the Colts will very important in the outcome for the Saints.
This really has to be nice for the older, great LSU/Saints players like Dalton Hilliard and Eric Martin who never got to play for a team of this caliber for the Saints.

quote:Yes, and it took several injuries in the secondary for him to start. And he did better than anyone expected, I loved watching him have a great game.

quote:And you would be wrong, don't you think the saints signed Mark Brunell to a multi million dollar contract hoping he never started a single game? Teams need lots of corners and he is a solid 3rd or 4th CB. I am not trashing the guy when I say I don't think any team will ever sign him expecting him to be one of THE starters at CB.

Stupid comment.
Again, I always root for former tigers and I would be happy if Gay proves me wrong. I think LSU would have won MNC03 without him and the saints would still be in the SB without him. So I think he has been good enough to play big league ball and lucky enough to be on championship teams, not accomplished in that he was a difference-maker in his teams getting to the championships.

Faneca, Mawae, Faulk careers >>>>>>>>>>>>>Henderson & Gay
there are many older greats above them as well.
while it is awesome that they have rings and been on championship teams, don't spin it to make it sound as if they have been more successful. It's about Pro-Bowls baby.

Yes, there are plenty of Tigers with better careers. Jim Taylor and Y.A. Tittle were All-Americans and Hall of Famers. Tittle was born in Texas. Taylor was born in Baton Rouge. I believe the original point of this post is that Henderson and Gay are Louisiana natives who have had great success at the college level and the pro level in their home state of Louisiana (playing for LSU & the Saints). They both have a chance to add Super Bowl Rings to go with their National Championship rings. And both will have been accomplished playing in the state of Louisiana.
Although not Tigers, Terry Bradshaw and Doug Williams played college football in their home state of Louisiana and both are Super Bowl MVPs. But neither played for LSU, nor the Saints.
It's unlikely but wouldn't it be great if Henderson or Gay had an outstanding game and was named MVP. There have been unlikely MVPs in the past. Brees will spread the ball around quite a bit so Henderson will likely have a good game, just not outstanding. But a Randall Gay pick six to win the game would be pretty awesome.

PEOPLE HOW MANY SUPER BOWLS HAVE THE SAINTS WON? THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION IS THE FUNDAMENTAL POINT OF THE OP! GEEZ

Randall Gay spent all night chasing his man and wasn't that close. Numerous passes if Farve was on target would have been big yardage plays. He's like Jason David plays zone but can't cover his on shadow in man to man

Reading comprehension is at an all time low on the Rant right now.
The OP is talking about LOUISIANA teams only.

try deducing my point, Albert.
quote:
I say they are the most accomplished pure Louisiana athletes to ever play any team sport.
My comprehension is fine. When "pure Louisiana" is brought up, it leads one to assume a more worthy acknowledgement. It could have been worded differently.
When it is said and done, the Saints are no more LA than the Dallas Cowboys as far as roster make up. Pro ball is a sport comprised largely of mercinaries. That is why I prefer college football.
