While House is not officially gone at the moment, we all know this is inevitable at this point. Until the coaching board is fired up, lets discuss:

1. Jim Leonhard

quote:

Following his retirement from a 10-year career in the NFL, Leonhard joined the Badgers’ staff as defensive backs coach in 2016. He became defensive coordinator less than a year later and went on to be named a finalist for the Broyles Award, presented to the nation’s top assistant coach, in his first season running UW’s defense.

With Leonhard on staff, Wisconsin’s defense has quite simply been one of the nation’s most complete and high-performing units.

When Fickell got the Wisconsin gig, Leonhard passed on several NFL DC offers including Green Bay. He is currently an analyst for Illinois. Clearly waiting for his next big move. Would he consider a college DC opening? Or is he waiting for a HC position..

2. Clark Lea

quote:

While at Notre Dame, Lea molded a defense that led the Fighting Irish to an appearance in the 2020 ACC Championship Game by finishing the regular season 10-0 and with a No. 2 national ranking.

Lea’s defense finished 2020 ranked eighth nationally in fumbles recovered (10), 12th in third-down conversion percentage (31.4), 14th in scoring defense (19.7), 17th in rushing defense (113.0), 17th in tackles for loss/game (7.5) and 25th in total defense (343.6).

In their final game of 2020, the Fighting Irish held Alabama to 31 points in the Rose Bowl, marking the Crimson Tide’s lowest point total of the season and more than two touchdowns below its 11-game average of 49.7 points/game. It was also Alabama’s lowest point total since the national title game on Jan. 7, 2019, when it lost 44-16 to Clemson.

The No. 2 regular season ranking for the Fighting Irish was their highest since 2012. Notre Dame also claimed a 47-40 double-overtime victory against No. 1 Clemson. Lea was named one of 15 semifinalists for the Broyles Award, presented to the best assistant coach in college football.

Currently the HC at his alma mater Vanderbilt. Although the record for the commodores is in the dumps, it would be hard to see any movement this season. Crazier things have happened though.. With deep roots to Brian Kelly, this proven DC would be a great pick up.

3. Dave Aranda

quote:

Now entering his sixth season as a defensive coordinator at a Power 5 Conference school, Aranda’s defense has ranked in the Top 12 nationally in total yards five times. His defense has also ranked among the top 10 in scoring four of the past six years. Since taking over as the defensive coordinator at Utah State in 2014, Aranda’s defenses have given up a touchdown or less in 45 of 93 games.

Self explanatory. Elite defensive mind. Taking his chance in the HC world with Baylor. Should be on the market again soon. Same story as Lea..too soon to look?

4. Morgan Scalley

quote:

Scalley, who owns a reputation as one of the brightest defensive minds in the business, was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2019 when the Utes ranked second in the FBS in total defense. He has instilled the culture and identity of the Utah Defense known as RSNB – standing for Relentless, Smart, Nasty, Ballhawks.
Utah has led the Pac-12 five times in his seven seasons as defensive coordinator in rushing defense (2016, '18, '19, ’20 and ‘21) —ranking third in the nation in 2019 and fifth in in 2018.
The Utes have finished atop the conference in sacks and tackles for loss three times under Scalley, most recently back-to-back in 2021 and ’22. The team also finished the 2018 season ranked 11th nationally and first in the Pac-12 in sacks.
Utah has finished in the top-half of the Pac-12 in total defense six times in the past eight seasons, ranking second nationally and first in the league in 2019.
Over the past four seasons, Scalley's defense has held opponents to 15 points or fewer 24 times, tied for ninth-most by a Power Five program.

Has spent 16 seasons at Utah. Routinely in conversations as one of the best assistants in the league. Can we make an offer he cant refuse?

5. William Boom Muschamp

quote:

In all, Muschamp has coached 38 defensive backs that have been taken in the NFL Draft -- 21 in the first three rounds -- including eight first-round selections, most recently Lewis Cine in 2022.

He got his start as a graduate assistant at Auburn in 1995-96 before taking defensive coaching positions at West Georgia (1998)) and Eastern Kentucky (1999). He moved to Division I in 2001 as a linebacker coach on Nick Saban’s staff at LSU before being promoted to defensive coordinator from 2002-04. The Tigers won the BCS National Championship in 2003.

He followed Saban to the Miami Dolphins as assistant head coach in 2005. In 2006 he was named defensive coordinator at Auburn, where he served until 2007. He was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Texas from 2008-2010 before being named head coach at Florida in 2011. In 2015, Muschamp moved to Auburn as defensive coordinator, and in 2016 was named head coach at South Carolina, where he served through the 2020 season.

Has kept up with the game by riding with Kirby at Georgia as the Co-DC. Would be very difficult to pull him away from Kirby. One would think Schuman makes a jump soon and Will becomes the DC as a place holder until Kirby trains his next great one. Worth a shot.

6. Steve Clinkscale

quote:

Clinkscale was hired as the defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach ahead of the 2021 season. He is in his third season with the Wolverine defense in 2023, having been elevated to Co-Defensive Coordinator ahead of the 2022 campaign.

Under Clinkscale's direction, U-M has ranked top-30 in the NCAA in pass defense and top 20 in pass defense efficiency in consecutive seasons, including a No. 5 national ranking in efficiency in 2022. Michigan had the NCAA's No. 8 scoring defense in 2021 and the No. 7 scoring defense in 2022. Opponents threw more interceptions (14) than touchdowns (11) against the U-M secondary in 2022, completing just 55.9 percent of their attempted passes.

Clinkscale has coached two NFL draft picks at Michigan: first-round selection Daxton Hill and second-round pick D.J. Turner. Hill was All-Big Ten first-team (2021) and Turner was a second-team honoree (2022); Vincent Gray and Brad Hawkins (third team, 2021) have also earned all-conference honors during his tenure.

Clinkscale joined the Wolverines' staff after spending five seasons (2016-20) at the University of Kentucky under head coach Mark Stoops in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

7. Scott Symons

quote:

Scott Symons was hired as SMU's Defensive Coordinator in December 2021 after spending three seasons as Defensive Coordinator at Liberty, while also working with safeties and linebackers.

Symons completed his first year as Defensive Coordinator with the Mustangs in 2022. SMU went 7-5 in the regular season, and faced BYU in the New Mexico Bowl. The Mustangs made 964 total tackles across their 13 games, including 28.5 sacks and 76.0 tackles for loss. SMU picked off 10 passes in the 2022 season, as well as forcing 12 fumbles, eight of which were recovered by the Mustangs. Symons’ defense held North Texas to a season-low 10 points in the season opener on September 3.

Symons helped mentor All-American Athletic Conference second-team selection Elijah Chatman, who was also member of the Bronko Nagurski, Outland Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award Watch Lists, Chatman finished the regular season with 37 tackles, including four for loss and three sacks. He added one fumble recovery for a touchdown and a blocked PAT.

Prior to the 2022 season, Symons was named to Dave Campbell's Texas Football 40 Under 40 List.

Liberty closed out the 2021 season with a win in the Lending Tree Bowl and finished in the top 20 in passing yards allowed (9th, 180.3), red zone defense (10th, .725), total defense (15th, 320.2) and tackles for loss (16th, 7.1), while also ranking 26th in sacks (2.85) and 27th in scoring defense (21.5).

In 2020, Symons helped the Flames to a 10-1 season and a No. 17 final ranking in the AP Poll, their highest in program history. He was named to the Broyles Award Watch List and led the defense to a top-20 ranking in total defense (No. 11, 317.7).

8. Spence Nowinsky

quote:

Nowinsky is in his second year as the Bobcats’ Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Ends Coach. Under his guidance, the defense aided the Bobcats in their fourth 10-win season in program history, highlighted by an undefeated record on Frank Solich Field and an overtime victory in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl.

Ohio's 2022 defense finished second in the MAC in points allowed per game (21.1), less than a quarter of a point behind the leader. After their seven-game winning streak against MAC opponents, defensive end Jack McCrory, linebacker Keye Thompson and safety Tariq Drake earned All-MAC Third Team honors.

In 2021, Nowinsky Coached Ivan Pace, First Team All MAC Linebacker, Co-MAC Defensive Player of the Year, MAC Linebacker of the Year, and 2nd Team All-American Action Network. Nowinsky also coached Matt Salopek, 2nd Team All MAC Linebacker. Nowinsky had seven total All MAC Defensive Players during the 2021 season.

The Miami Defensive Unit was Number One in the MAC in Scoring Defense, Rushing Defense and Sacks during the 2021 campaign. The Miami RedHawks earned their first bowl victory in over a decade on December 23, 2021 using a dominant defensive performance to defeat North Texas in the inaugural Frisco Football Classic Bowl. The RedHawks defense limited the Mean Green to 317 yards of total offense in the game, 89 yards rushing, 2.8 yards per carry, and 14 points, in addition to two forced first-half turnovers that helped Miami establish momentum. Miami beat North Texas, 27-14.

Under Nowinsky, the RedHawks defense finished in the top-half of almost every statistical category in 2018. Miami finished fourth in scoring defense (25.5), third in rush defense (159.7) and fifth in total defense (368.2) and sacks (29). A year later, in 2019, the defense got even better, finishing second in scoring (22.5), third in total defense (352.9) and first in pass defense (175.9).

9. Blake Baker

quote:

Blake Baker joined the Mizzou coaching staff as safeties coach in January 2022. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in late February. He spent the 2021 season as linebackers coach at LSU.

He comes to Mizzou with six years of experience as a defensive coordinator – two at Miami (2019, 2020) and four at Louisiana Tech (2015-18). In addition to his coordinator duties with Miami and Louisiana Tech, Baker also coached the linebackers at both schools.

He joined the Hurricanes in January of 2019 and in his first year, he oversaw a Miami defense that ranked No. 13 nationally in total defense and 12th in the nation in yards allowed per play. The 2019 Hurricane defense also ranked among the top 20 in the nation in rush defense (No. 10), redzone defense (No. 16) and pass defense (No. 18).

10. Shiel Wood

quote:

Shiel Wood joins the Green Wave as the Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers coach in the spring of 2023. Wood joins the Tulane coaching staff after spending the 2022 season as Troy’s defensive coordinator, while also working with the safeties unit there.

Wood oversaw a defensive unit that paved the way for Troy’s 12-2 record in 2022 that saw the Trojan’s first ever ranking in the final AP Poll at No. 19 after winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship over Coastal Carolina and the Cure Bowl over No. 22 ranked UTSA.

The Trojan defensive unit ranked eighth nationally in turnovers gained, 14th in sacks, eighth in scoring defense, 19th in total defense and 24th in rushing defense, while finishing ranked in the top five in the Sun Belt Conference for scoring defense, total defense, sacks and interceptions.

Additionally, linebacker Carlton Martial earned All-America honors for the fourth season after finishing third nationally, averaging 11.2 tackles per game and as the all-time leader in career tackles at the FBS level.

Prior to serving as the defensive coordinator at Troy, Wood spent two seasons at Army West Point as the co-defensive coordinator, also working with inside linebackers in 2020 and safeties in 2021.

During the 2021 campaign, Wood helped guide Army to a 9-4 record, capped by a victory over Missouri in the Armed Forces Bowl. Army ranked 17th nationally, holding opponents to just 328.4 yards per game, 36th allowing just 22.3 points per game and 17th allowing only 117.2 yards per game on the ground. The Black Knights were also one of the fewest penalized teams in the country, finishing third with just 3.85 penalties per game.

11. Bryan Brown

quote:

A multiple-time Broyles Award nominee, Brown spent four seasons as the defensive coordinator at Louisville. He was elevated to associate head coach in 2020. He spent six seasons at Appalachian State, coaching cornerbacks from 2012 to 2018, and adding defensive coordinator responsibilities beginning in 2018.

Brown has helped lead his teams to seven bowl games since 2015.

Taking over a defense that was ranked near the bottom of college football at UofL in 2018, Brown saw his troops improve dramatically during his tenure – culminating in one of the most prolific seasons in Louisville history in 2022.

My mega pick to this mega stupid thread.

1. Matt House

House began his coaching career at his alma mater Michigan State University in 2001. After the 2002 season he went to the University of North Carolina where he served as an assistant defensive coach for two season. House would move to the National Football League in 2006. In 2006 he became the Buffalo Bulls’ defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator. He made the jump to the NFL in 2008 as an assistant special teams coach for the Panthers. For the next three years he coached in St. Louis under Steve Spagnuolo as a defensive quality control coach. In 2012 he returned to the college ranks working at Pitt as the team's secondary coach. The following year he was promoted to defensive coordinator where he stayed until the end of the 2014 season. In 2015 he served as FIUs defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach.[1]

For 2016, he joined Mark Stoops Kentucky staff as the team's inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator.[2] The following season he was promoted to defensive coordinator and remained in that position until the end of the 2018 season when he made his return to the National Football League.[3][4]

In 2019, House became the Chiefs’ linebackers coach,[5] joining a staff that would go on to win the Super Bowl that season defeating the San Francisco 49ers,[6] and then also make an appearance in the 2020 Super Bowl before losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.[1][7] In December 2021, House was named defensive coordinator at LSU.[8]

I have no reason to believe this after what happened with the Brian Polian situation.

Give me Leohnard or Scalley. Aranda is better than what we had, but it’s time for something different, and I don’t see Kelly bringing someone like that over who had those kind of ties to the old regime.

This is nuts. Look, Kelly my be a lot of things but stupid he isn’t. He fired Pullian and it seriously hurt us with recruiting and the portal. He will be very careful about letting anyone go if we get 9 wins and a significant bowl. Any decisions to fire a coordinator will not be based on fans opinions.

Scalley is born and raised in Salt Lake City, played at Utah, and hasn’t coached anywhere other than Utah.

I don’t think he’s leaving
