What an asset this kid is.
He will likely take more damage in the SEC week in week out, but if managed properly he’s such a reliable innings eater.
Gives Yeskie such a luxury to choose matchups for the other arms with less innings to worry about. Complements so many of our power arms and his changeup is filthy the way he can move and locate. Probably the most underrated pitch of anyone’s repertoire on this staff.
I liked his experience coming in but questioned his effectiveness in the SEC. To be seen yet but I’m optimistic. I think he’s the best pure pitcher we have and a competitor that can work in most styles of games we will play, with the durability to use multiple times in a weekend if needed.

I agree. At worst he’s at least going to give you a fighting chance even if he gives up a couple runs

He’ll give up some bombs and get smacked around at times in the SEC but it won’t effect him like others imo. They’ll be able to take him out and he’ll fight another day—maybe the next day. He will also have plenty of days he gets in a rhythm and you look up and he’s gotten through 3-4 inns with minimal damage imo.
To me, he’s the opposite of a guy like Casan Evans who has a way better arm obviously but no experience. I happen to think Evans will have some games where his letter-high fastballs will get tagged in the SEC. He will give up some big homeruns imo. And I worry how that will affect him as a freshman.
I don’t worry about that with Cowan. He’s fought the wars already and I think he’s always going to be that steady hand that you know what you’re getting every time you throw him out there.
Cant be overstated how valuable that is especially for a team like this that’s deeply talented but also has so much uncertainty and inexperience.

Cowan was a great pick up. Gonna pitch a lot of innings this year.
