To me, its always meant not starting your best pitcher in game 1. Teams did it all the time vs Skenes in 2023, and thats what we called it. Bama did it pretty effectively this season.
I'm not sure why the rant wants to re define the word now.
Coastal is pitching off, and has been since the Sun Belt tournament.
Pre conference play Morrison wasn't starting Fridays either. Think that has more to do with easing him back from TJ and a Tuesday game vs UNC Scnhall wanted him to start

I have always seen/heard it used as pitching someone other than your ordinary starters. Like if we had started Cowan or Shores in game one of the SEC Tournament or the Regional.

What I recall is teams pitching their normal Saturday or Sunday starter on Friday that one weekend. The difference here is that Morrison was not their Friday starter (regardless of whether he was/is their best pitcher) even before their conference tournament. So without a clearly defined and consistent Friday starter established going into the post-season, it really doesn't make sense to call it "pitching off" when their not really doing anything different.

I’d say “Pitching off” and “Pitching backwards” both mean throwing a lesser pitcher in Game 1 in order to maximize overall wins, but the success of “Pitching off” is determined based on whether or not you win that Game 1 whereas the success of “Pitching backwards” is determined by total number of wins in the series/tournament. This seems more like pitching backwards than pitching off (though really I think this is just a team that uses a rotation with its best pitcher throwing Game 2).
You “pitch off” to maximize your chances of going 2-0 and you “pitch backwards” to minimize your chances of going 0-2.
