Clemson Can’t Stop the Empty Gun Package (2018-19)

This is mainly from the 2018-19 Clemson Bama NCG:

-Bama was unstoppable with five wideouts or 4 with an RB in motion. They absolutely gashed Clemson out of these packages. I have no idea why they didn’t PASS out of it more.

-Tua was very premature with his RPO reads. This would eat up first and second down often, leaving them with 3rd and long. Tua is accurate and has a great arm, but his reads/progression were exposed here.

-Honestly, Bama’s overall play calling was hot garbage. Clemson’s D-line last year was a huge strength, and Bama insisted on running into a brick wall over and over again

-Bama had success hitting the TE over and over again

-Oh my god, the fake FG. Saban, are you fricking joking??? This is his worst called game, ever.

-Tua’s INTs were throws you’d never expect Burrow to make: a jump route causing a pick-6, throwing into triple coverage etc.

-Tua was not a dual threat in this game.

There’s a lot of positives here:

-the same 2019 LSU packages Bama used were simply unstoppable.

-Clemson won’t have that same d-line to apply pressure and will gamble with more and more blitzes as Burrow rips them apart

-Trevor Lawrence tends to throw several terrible balls every game.

-lastly, and more importantly: LSU DOESN’T HAVE SAIVON SMITH. HOLY shite WAS HE BAD.

Clemson D-line is pretty good but NOT good enough. Burrow will audible Clemson to death. The Clemson secondary is excellent, but they can't cover the entire field and make up for the D-line. As you eluded to...Too many weapons for LSU with the right QB to utilize them efficiently. Now add Divinity to the LSU D, and LSU wins!

If anything, watching the NCG vs Bama has made me confident that Clemson’s defense will have serious trouble keeping up. Their offense has what it takes to keep up in a shootout, but they need everything to go right on every drive.

This is what every Clemson board I have seen lacks. Knowledgeable fans on actual football.

I haven't watched a ton of the Bama game because I think they understand this is a different animal and they cant use that gameplan.

However I am glad to read that about empty sets, LSU uses motion to empty quite a lot to force a LB or Safety out on the boundaries and rape them.

Seeing more holes in this Clemson team everytime I watch tape. I guarantee Brady and Burrow already know.

Check out the first quarter when you have some time. It’s worth it.

Every time they ran an LSU-like package, it worked for huge gains and negates Venables’s blitz.

Every time they went under center or with three wideout sets, Clemson took over.

I'll watch it tomorrow evening. Thanks.

Have you seen any tape when they faced a larger 3 man front like LSU'S vs the smaller 4 man front they pushed around for OSU? Watching that game they ran just enough early to stay in it then TL busted out through some massive holes. I dont think they can move Shelvin and Lawrence as easy but looking for tape.

Most snaps I saw were 4 wide with a RB in the backfield but it goes towards the same point.

What I am seeing though, even when watching the OSU game, is they play soft cushion with their DB's and blitz heavy. JB and Jefferson will destroy that.

You make a great point: I’m having a hard time finding Trevor Lawrence vs a three-man front.

There’s NC State, but they don’t have nearly the talent and have gotten blown out early for the tape to really mean anything.

I will be happy and shocked if they play off the slot receiver like ou did. I swear, it can't be this simple, but it seems like the only way we get stopped is if you get in our slot receivers face and get hands on him, when they don't do that, we shred them way worse.

I hope it's not that simple, but it seems to be the true formula for success . I mean that they get a little less shredded then when they play off, when they play off our receivers, slot especially, they get super shredded

True, I cant find any tape of them facing anyone close to the size and abilities as LSU. Doesn't mean they can't run on us just something to watch.

Also after watching a bit more on Lawrence's deep throws he just seems a bit erratic with accuracy this season. He still makes some amazing throws but he also has some that are way off target. I just haven't seen Burrow miss as badly all year as TL has. The flea flicker vs USC first play was sorely underthrown and a better DB picks it. Then he turns around a few series later and drops a dime on a post route for a TD. Next series he throws an out route 5 feet over his wide open mans head. His mechanics seem slightly off, hips not getting around maybe but its definitely erratic.

He was also erratic last season. And he was 54.5% against Ohio State.

TL & his weapons are talented enough to put up 21 points on LSU's D... 35 points with a little luck. But LSUs O will hang 40 to 50 against their D on auto-pilot. 60+ with a little luck.

He will be forced more than any other game to throw beyond 10 yards, that much I know. If he is at 50% total it'll be a long night for him.

They will for sure make some plays, but burrow puts pressure on the opponent to make ALL the plays.

Totally agree with OP. Clemson's D plays best when they can crash the box. Spread out is way way harder. LSU passes to set up runs, and Joe Brady and Joe Burrow will adjust to what they are doing after the first play.
