When I was at Tulane I could occasionally get a classmate or two to go to a few innings of a baseball game on a Friday night but that's about it. Most of the people who follow sports at Tulane would prefer to watch the marquee college games on TV on Saturday and go out after. Nobody was willing to waste any time heading down to the Dome to watch a mediocre football team with a few thousand men in their 60's and 70's who fuss at fans who make too much noise or, heaven forbid, stand up during the game.

Why does Tulane want out of this deal?
it doesn't benefit them from a financial or competitive standpoint

I think its ridiculous that we keep their athletic department alive and am all for ending the series but I'm gonna miss those "9-7" shirts.

Many years ago, then A.D. Carl Maddox hawked the game over being an in-state rivalry, and that each team would occasionally have a shitty season that would make this particular match-up even more meaningful. However, the two programs have gone very different directions since that time.
From a historical perspective, Tulane was the ones who originally got LSU interested in playing football so that they would have an in-state opponent (back in the 1890s).

Tulane, LSU football series not working out as hoped
quote:
Tulane couldn't sell its modest allotment of 7,000 tickets for last year's game at Tiger Stadium, and LSU fell far short of selling its allotment of 40,000 for the 2007 game at the Superdome.
If fans aren't buying the series, it would make more sense to find alternatives, especially in these trying economic times. Tulane is getting better offers from other BCS conference schools than the LSU series currently yields, and LSU can always find a willing foe from a non-BCS conference or Division I-AA for the same as or less than what Tulane is getting.
Plus, there's a problem in 2011 when LSU would like to play at West Virginia; also playing at Tulane that year would leave the Tigers with six home games when school officials say they have to have seven to balance the books.
On the field itself, the first three games in the series have been won by the Tigers by a combined score of 118-26.
Although recent Tulane signee Wilson Van Hooser is guaranteeing a Tulane victory before his career is over, only those who view the world through green-colored glasses would predict that the gap between the two programs will be closed any time soon.
With Ole Miss' program seeming to be on the rise, Tulane would be looking at a likely 0-2 start. That's not a good way to build fan confidence in a program in increasingly desperate need of same.
When the 10-year renewal of the LSU-Tulane series was announced in the spring of 2005, it sounded like a great idea on a lot of levels.
But not every great idea works out. And, unfortunately, this appears to be one of them.

Playing Tulane was worthwhile when New Orleans was a hotspot for football talent. After Katrina, the landscape has changed.
Since we play Florida every year in the SEC (royal screw job altho I love the game every year), we need at least one if not 2 OOC rentawins.
Tulane can be one of those, provided we work it out that they have to come to TS to collect their paycheck. Playing in New Orleans under the current landscape is stupid.

As a Tulane fan I hope it is cancelled as well. Personally, I think its hilarious to watch all you bandwagon idiots talk about how great you are. Are you people delusional, LSu is acting like mid century Notre Dame barnstorming all over the nation to take their great show on the road. Ya'll weren't worth a sh*t last year quite frankly. Also if it weren't for about 6 specific plays over the last 2 years Knute Rockne I mean Les Miles would've been fired already. Les lucked into his 1 national championship, last year ya'll were above average at best. IF the state university of Louisiana would rather play in Atlanta (like you havent played there 10 times in the last 10 years in either the Peach Bowl or the SEC Championship) than once every other year in New Orleans (where about 50% of your entire fanbase lives) that's great. I find it pretty outrageous that Les believes playing UNC in Atlanta will help recruiting. First off UNC is going to beat the sh*t out of ya'll, secondly LSU pretty routinely has a top 5 recruiting class what more help does Les need on the recruiting trail. All this would make sense if say LSU wanted to play a game in Houston against A&M or Texas or in Dallas, or even in Austin, but Atlanta? It's complete B.S. Also I graduated from LSU and if there's one thing I know about you diehard fans it's that if LSU goes 6-6 nobody will care or go to the games kind of like baseball the last 5 years. Let the "you have no fans and nobody cares about you greenie weenies outside of uptown" begin.

Your post is so ridiculous, I probably shouldnt respond. But I have nothing else to do.
LSU still ranked among the top in attendance last year, even though our record was mediocre. Even in the Archer-Hallman-lean Dinardo years, we were still drawing in the top 20% of div 1 programs. That probably puts higher in attendance than most NFL teams at that time.
Tulane draws nobody.
Even in your undefeated year, you didnt average as many fans as showed up to the last LSU-tulane game in the Dome.
So yes, LSU should take their show on the road. They are one of the top 5 programs in the country.
If tulane wants to come to TS every year to get pounded but make their best payday of the year, I'm all for it for traditions sake. But playing Tulane on their own field is as ludicrous as playing any other lower tier D1 or D2 school at home.

68-22-7 does not a rivalry make.
