USC was a dominant school that got top recruits like hotcakes back then. Its a profound thing how it's all fallen away since then since it's still LA, its still Hollywood with a rich tradition.
Not saying this was the definitive reason but didn't his girlfriend at the time go there? Or got accepted there? Probably made things easier.

That is a key statement here. USC was the dominant power to get the recruits, much like Alabama is now.
