Didn't Saban have to use someone,I think a DB, and burned the redsirt for a bowl game. It was the only game the kid played in all year.

The rule is that not only can a redshirt not play in a game during the regular season, he also cannot play with himself while the game is being played. During bowl games, however, redshirt players ae allowed to play with themselves during the game. I think that is why many of them stay behind and watch the game in the team's hotel. Hope this helps!
