ESPN, Advocate, Reveille and more are reporting that LSU is going to fire CBK by sending him an official termination letter.

It’s not only needed, it’s a very good legal move. Resets the 7 day period.

Technically, no, it ends any possible 7 day cure/mitigate period. By definition the cure/mitigate period has to be during the time of employment and arguably not while the person is suspended. They could have sent notice of the intent to fire for cause after BK filed suit but I haven't seen anything to the effect and depending on the reason the fact that he was not actively in the position may not have allowed BK to mitigate/cure. For example, it is hard for someone to quit drinking on the job if they aren't on the job during the mitigate/cure period.
