While periodically checking this board, one could get the notion that Brandon Harris is a returning starter. Not a true freshman poised for a good season like LF, Dupre, ect. It seems this board has already crowned Harris the starter and some how developed an attitude like he has already proven himself.

Don't get me wrong, I think Harris will be a great QB for LSU, and if the race is a tie this fall give it to the young gun, but the hype this kid is getting is starting to get out of control.

I recall Shep getting way more hype comming in but I don't remember anyone truly beleiving he would start at QB as a true freshman. Is Harris the first true freshman QB since Perrilloux to receive this much pressure/hype?

Not saying that Harris doesn't come with legit hype...but what you are referencing is a reaction to the competition he has...not solely based on his potential.

If Harris came in last year...with Mett still here it simply would look completely different.

I don't think anyone has said Harris is proven anything.

You realize Jennings is only a sophomore right?

Another retarded offseason thread.

As a true freshman....probably. Although Mett had a ton of hype coming in too. Just wasn't a true freshman.

And Harris is a freshman which makes him the young gun. I'm assuming you have never heard a coach speak.

Oh sorry I forgot about all those times Miles and Saban referred to their quarterback as a young gun.

My point was that Jennings is still a "young gun". Harris may be younger, but Jennings is still young.

I think LSU fans are fascinated with the idea of what COULD happen with Harris.

He COULD come in and win the starting job as a freshman.

He COULD become a great QB considering he is being coached by Cam Cameron.

He COULD show promise, have a good season, we win 9 games, and make us a serious contender next year.

He has the ability to do these things and that thought excites LSU fans. The truth is that we dont know what is going to happen. He could just as easily get beatin out by Jennings, we could play two QBs all season and neither be that good, and have a 7-5 record. We got a little taste of what Jennings can do and we didnt necessarily like it and we are quick to dismiss him. The same could happen to Harris also. Is Harris over hyped? Probably, but maybe not and the thought of him living up to the hype is really exciting.

I don't really know how you quantify hype, but Zach certainly had a lot of it.

It's a little different this year because we haven't had this much uncertainty or lack of experience at QB in quite some time.

I will say, though, that RP's hype was well in-place before he even arrived on campus. He was one of the most sought-after recruits in recent memory, and came in with massive expectations. Conversely, Harris came in with a fair amount of hype, but has actually generated much more since his commitment with things that he has done (strong showing at 7-on-7 or whatever, the spring game, throwing it to the 50 from his knees, working with Whitfield, and just generally displaying a good work ethic).

I think this is a pretty fair assessment by the OP. Other than Zach Lee, yeah, I think Harris would be compared to RP in hype.

I think those that followed harris on the recruiting board understand how special he could turn out to be. he's already impressing the best qb guru in the game, george whitfield. we'll see what happens of course, but the sky is the limit with harris. he's got the physical tools and the mental edge to play the position at a high level.

couple that with his ability to run and it makes him very dangerous.

Regardless, when coaches refer to the young gun, it does not nessasarliy mean age. Who can we have here the longest. Who can have that extra year of development if they are both on the same level right now.

Clearly the guy was referring to age in school which is what was being discussed in my comment.
