They leave him in for a sac bunt if needed in their first at bat. If not, they put in a different DH for the rest of the game

It gives them the choice to pick who they want to hit in whatever situation presents when that spot comes up for its first plate appearance. They will probable put someone in who will stay in that spot for most of the game

The pitcher would not lay down the bunt. They would pinch hit a better bunter as opposed to the normal DH

So they put a pitcher that has no chance of playing as essentially a place holder. If you need the better bunter than DH, you can use him at first at bat, or you can save him if you need him late in the game. But you can only use that player once, as opposed to starting him and you don't need him the first time, you waste him altogether?
It makes sense, in theory, but how many times does this scenario actually pan out.
ETA: am i understanding this right>?
