It would have been a nice story if he could have stayed on in some capacity, but if you are going to make an investment of this magnitude and throw all of your chips in with Caldwell then she deserves the opportunity to make those calls.
Is it the wrong decision? Hindsight will tell us.

First and foremost because you are a lying POS and don't know shite about the program or the history of LSU basketball.
Go frick yourself for thinking you know me. Have I said a bad word about Starkey? No and I never will. This is the nature of the business. If a coach is fired/resigns the next coach can't be expected to keep the assistants no matter how loyal or great they have been for the program. It is what it is. Would it be nice if Starkey stayed? Sure, but I won't fault Caldwell for bringing in coaches she's familiar with.

I'm sure Starkey is a great guy and from what I have seen he has been a pretty great ambassador for LSU....but like others have pointed out, coaching isn't a stable career. I'd be willing to bet he'll be offered some kush job in the AD making money for nothing.
No need to be a dick.

You were born the year I started LSU so I highly doubt you attended 1/32 of the womens (or mens for that matter) games my family did from 68 -2009. Where were you when i went to my first game? My guess, not even in nutville since you are a kid. Your old man may have been born then, but likely not.
Starkey is/was regarded as one of the top assistants in the country and SHAME on her for not keeping him in that capacity. His forte' is defense which amazingly carried both Sue's and Pokey's asses through those runs.

I find it a very good sign that Caldwell's entire staff is coming over with her.

Good for you nobody gives a shite.

Yea nobody doubts his contributions and everyone is appreciative of his many years of great work at LSU(that's what this thread is supposed to be about not how long some crotchety old frick has been going to games). Still considering his contributions Coach Caldwell deserves the right to pick her own staff.

And if he truly is, he understands this is part of the business.
He has, in fact, been incredibly fortunate that he hasn't had to move 15 times in the last 20+ years like most assistants do. Is he a great person? Undoubtedly so, but at the end of the day it is a business decision.

no it is another screwing by Alleva. See Trent Johnson... Bertman made sure Starkey was protected.
He gives a woman 700+ to coach a team that will lose 2+ million no matter how many fans we think she will get into that stadium because we know La is a broke arse state with broke arse people living there that would rather spend their hard earned money going to football rather than basketball games. it is a hard reality, but that is what it is. he could have taken a local college or successful high school coach and kept Starkey and still lost 2+ million and probably been just as good.
how is that good business for LSU, its students and alumni like myself that are paying TAF every year to keep the tickets we have?
It is not.

You sure did from your first reply which started my rant. YOU laughed at the fact that he has a sick wife and turned down the head coaching job or didn't allow himself to be considered when Pokey was released and the fact that he took a season on teh brink of disaster and took the team to the Final 4. that is a slap in his face and disrepect towards him! that is what pissed me off.

If any of you followed the women's program you would know the reason he wanted to stay at LSU was due to his wife's illnes. That is why he turned down other head coaching positions.

Well, since you know so much about WBB, you would know they were breaking even when they were selling out the PMAC 4-5 years ago.
You sound way too emotionally invested in this to rationally think through this, FWIW.

He didn't want it because it involved less X's and O's which he enjoys the most.
If his wife wasn't ill, you'd feel different about this situation.

You really think I was laughing at his wife's illness, jeez you're retarded. As for the rest of your thoughts:
Women's basketball season tickets start at about $2.50 a game that's not going to send anybody to a soup kitchen. You've apparently been going to games for the last 50 years you of all people should know this.
Starkey was there this year with a hall of fame coach and they didn't make the tourney so not likely.

Nice, uninformed, off-the cuff response.
Starkey is a basketball coach. He will be coaching basketball somewhere before too long.

It is only what you do at the moment of choosing, especially when you have to choose between what is right and what is expedient.

Your passion for Starkey is very commendable and well-placed, but you are making yourself look bad.
A new coach has every right to determine who their coaching staff will be. Caldwell spoke about how comfortable and confident she is in her 3 assistants. This is her job now, and her program now. It is not the responsibility of the AD to "find" him a new job within the AD, and that won't happen. As mentioned earlier, Starkey will get another assistant job somewhere, and it will happen sooner than later, and whoever gets him will get a steal. But don't criticize LSU or the new coach.
And fwiw, his wife DID have breast cancer....this is pretty widely known.

I went to every game and we only sold it out only 1 time during those 4 consecutive seasons. and no we never broke even. Travel costs killed us during the tournament.

that was my original point. he has given 20+ years to those programs and did everything they asked except be considered for the head job.
I would do the same thing if my wife was ill. I honor that and don't shite on it like it appears Alleva did.

She had MS also then. See my previous link about the subject. I remember it well from teh 2007 final four.
But the Bayou is home for Starkey and his wife and their two dogs, Miles and Patton. Their basset hound is named after Miles Davis because Starkey loves jazz. Patton, a German shepherd mix, got his name for obvious reasons.
