Question for the Old Timers. Why is Bo Schembechler considered a great coach when is bowl record was 6-12 with only two rose bowl wins? Les kicks his mentor's butt.

because Mich had pretty much sucked for a while before then and Hayes had tOSU rolling so Bo came in and elevated Mich back to a major brand name. He took mich to a lot of rose bowls. He never had a losing season
Though he never won a NC, he made Mich a very good team for a long time

Good question, regardless of how Miles fits in or not.
Whereas Schembechler was indeed a fine coach, and had a good career at Miami (OH) before 1969, keep in mind a few things:
In regards to bowls, when he got to Ann Arbor in 1969 (first game was against Vandy,of all teams) only the Big 10 champ, or representative could go to a bowl and that bowl was the Rose. His 1970, 1972 and 1974 teams were 10-1 and top 5 with only a loss to Ohio State, but no bowl. His 1973 team was 10-0-1 and while the league lifted the 'no repeat' rule that year which would have ensured a Michigan Rose Bowl, the conference AD's voted 6-4 in favor of Ohio State after their 10-10 tie. The league allowed teams to go to other bowls the next year.
Also, ABC was the only game in town until the early 80's. Bo had played for Woody and coached briefly so the Bo-Woody match-ups were loved by the media and ABC. And,usually the Big 10 was on the line when Ohio State played Michigan.
Honestly, his overall record was a little inflated because until 1981 or so, the Big 10 really was Ohio State and Michigan and the other 8.

It's just not that easy to win a National Title. He won a lot of games and beat Woody Hayes so they loved him and he was a very good coach. 13 big ten titles back then even now is certainly nothing to thumb your nose at.

It's beating Ohio State. It's turning around a program that had been having problems. It's about his character. I was at Michigan during Bo's early years, and got to see more of him than the nation as a whole because of the local press coverage. Go watch the video of Les' press conference yesterday and you will see a reflection of Schembechler's dedication and loyalty to his teams and his school in how his student behaves.
Les' best quote from that press conference was “My strength and my weakness is loyalty, and I’ll always see it as a strength.” Typically a little quirky. But typically honest and unmistakable in its meaning.

I tried posting this same question a few days ago when TD was crashing. Schembechler won a ton of games, 13 Big Ten titles, zero national championships, shite the bed in bowls, and had a losing record against his arch rival. I think he's revered as a great coach for his longevity, his winning percentage, and because he coached in an era where priorities were different than they are today. I think college football was more regional during those years than it is today. I think in the case of the Big 10, there is still some truth to that. I think if Michigan or OSU were given the choice:
1. beat the other and win the Big 10
or
2. Lose Big 10 and lose to the other but win a national championship
They would choose option 2 more often than not.
