Until the playoff committee shows that they will put a 9-3 team in who played one of these big non conference games, I don’t see much utility in playing them right now. If we go 10-2 this year with a win over Clemson vs a win over Illinois State, is the playoff committee going to make us a top 4 seed and give us a bye? Probably not bc those top seeds will go to 11 win or better teams.
Also let’s be honest losing these openers has cost us so much money in retrospect vs if we played nobodies. 2022 and 2023 would have been 10 win regular seasons and new years six bowls. Last year didn’t really matter. But this year if we go 9-3 and miss the playoff bc of the Clemson loss, that’s potentially a lost home playoff game in Baton Rouge for another Outback bowl that hardly any fans will go to. They’re exciting to look forward to but there’s hardly any benefit to winning these games and a huge price to pay for losing them.
