Having said all that Miles biggest regular season win was 2005 at Alabama. Probably that Alabama team was not as good as this one, but they where 9-0 and also ranked #3. We were ranked #5 while we are #9 right now. That was a battle of top 5 teams, this one is not.

Yeah, I agree to date, that is the biggest.

No. But the fact is, for those of us constantly arguing how strong the SEC is, we consider in conference games to be tougher than OOC games, particularly road ones. If we beat Bama and win out...we'd play in the SECCG. That SECCG will be against Florida and would then be the biggest potential win of the Miles era.

Whoever we played in the NC would likely be considered a lesser team than the Bama or Florida teams we beat.

Yeah, it would. It would suck that we lost to a lesser team, but it would still mean that we beat a team considered better, considerably better at this point, than us.

I agree completely. I only quoted this part of your post, but this is exactly my logic on the situation.

In all of these games, LSU was the better team. If we beat Bama, we will be beating the undefeated favorite on the road who has not lost an SEC game in almost two years. That, to me, is a bigger win than beating a less talented Ohio State team in virtually our own backyard.

Exactly.

Look, I'm not stupid, I understand that the ramifications for winning the BCSCG are bigger than beating any conference foe in a regular season game.

However, from my perspective, there's a lot at stake in this game, most importantly proving that we are still a force in the SEC and not a middle-tier SEC team like we were last year.

A lot at stake? proving we are still a force? This is a very important game, no question but in the end it is still a regular season game that we have to win in order to get a shot at the real goal.

You don't play the season with the intent on winning specific regular season games as your goal. The goal is reaching the CG and bowl games and ultimately winning those. Two years ago we lost 2 regular season game and still won the SEC and NCG. That shows that regular season games can't possibly be a big regardless of the perceived quality of opponent.

If LSU was winless right now but somehow managed to win the game but lose the remaining games, would you call the season a success?

If the BCSCG was just a regular season OOC game, it wouldn't be considered that great.

My vote goes for the VT 2007 game.

When was the last time that a genuinely decent team got thrashed so badly? Closest example I can think of is USC/OU 04.

No. The win over Ohio State was, is and will be until he wins another NC game.

I agree and here's why:

How many teams could go into the SECCG after losing their senior QB the week before, play with a relatively untested backup, and win?

I know it was close and Tennessee was a mediocre SEC East Champ, but look at what happened to Oregon when Dixon went down that same November. They would've probably played for the national title instead of us if he hadn't gotten hurt.

But if we beat Bama at Bama, we will then likely be considered the better team--and rightfully so. With the scenario you and Alex have set up, we can only beat a better team if we are having a bad season. If we're having a good season and beat a good team, we will likely be considered better than theam. Cause you know, we beat them. So the only way Miles can win a big game by your standards would be if we are not a good team, which would already make Miles a failure. He can't win.

The problem is your taking this game at the time it's played, but looking at all the rest with the benefit of hindsight. LSU has played in huge games at the time, but a subsequent loss might have made them seem less big when looking back. As big as this game is Saturday, if we win it, but then lose to Ole Miss and Arkansas, was it really that big? Your answer would be no, but mine is yes. You can only go by how big they were at the time they were played. This one is huge, but so will be Ole Miss, and then Arkansas. And so were about 10 others we've played since Miles has been here.
