LSU gets Texas Tech at home. That’s a solid matchup.

Florida at West Virginia
Texas at Kentucky
Texas Tech at LSU
Kansas at Tennessee
Auburn at Baylor
Iowa State at Mississippi State
Alabama at Oklahoma
TCU at Missouri
Arkansas at Oklahoma State
Texas A&M at Kansas State

There is absolutely no reason that we shouldn’t have had Kansas coming to the PMAC this year.

This is exciting. Beard and Wade are the two best young coaches in the sport.

Agreed. Little disappointed that it isn't Kansas seeing how things were very well lined up to make that the choice. Odd that they would have them and TN play back to back years.

But like the other poster said about a PR nightmare, I could see the 2 conferences electing to not do that matchup for that reason and knowing the media would only want to talk about both schools and coaches being caught up in the basketball scandal mess.

Definitely an intriguing matchup of traditionally strong defensive team (Tech) against a traditionally strong offensive efficiency team (LSU).

VOLS are a bigger program and a better team so not sure why you’re so surprised

The surprise is not because Tennessee isn't supposed to be good this year (I expect them to be picked in the preseason to finish 2nd), but that UT played Kansas last season in the challenge. The powers that be generally haven't selected back-to-back matchups outside of Kansas v. Kentucky. That was simply because those two are two of the marquee programs in college basketball history.

Selecting UT/KU in back to back years bucks a lot of the past history of the matchups in this event. I'm not saying that the Big 12 and/or SEC is "wrong" for doing so, but I'd imagine neither conference wanted a 2 hour broadcast of shite stirring ESPN yammering on about the NCAA "issues" of Wade and Self rather than the game being played.

Likely has nothing to do with the matchup.

Umm...what?? We aren't talking about the Lady Vols in this thread.

Please explain by what measure you justify a statement like this?

I do not doubt that TN is a solid program and has some recent success; but to even suggest, let alone say, they are a bigger program and better team is absurd.

Just comparing LSU and TN, never mind some of the other SEC programs that also have way more historical success and tradition better than TN (e.g. Ark, FL, Auburn):

TN: 10x SEC champions (3 x's in last 20 years)
LSU: 11x SEC champions (4 x's in last 20 years)

TN: 22 Tournament appearances w/ ZERO Final 4's, ONE Elite 8, and eight Sweet 16's
LSU: 22 Tournament appearances w/ FOUR Final 4's, SIX Elite 8's, and ten Sweet 16's

The only measure by which TN is better than LSU is SEC tournament championships, which is 4 to 1.

And finally, let's compare the top 5 all time most famous/best players from both schools according to Ranker.com:

TN - Bernard King (#7 draft pick and #131 Top NBA players all-time), Grant Williams (#22 draft pick), Dale Ellis (#9 draft pick and #158 all-time), Allan Houston (#11 draft pick and #244 all-time), and Chris Lofton (not drafted)

LSU - Shaquille O'Neal (#1 draft choice, #8 Top NBA players all-time), Pete Maravich (#3 draft pick, #44 all-time, & still holds numerous college records), Bob Pettit (#2 draft pick and #28 all-time), Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (Chris Jackson, #3 draft pick), and Ben Simmons (#1 draft pick, NBA ROY)

List of former players doesn't even compare.

Spoke with a few staff members at recent practice. Still no decision on fans in stands. This team is a must watch.

UCLA and UNC are the ONLY 2 schools in the country that would have a shot to beat an LSU all-time basketball team.

Thought the matchups were decided by how the team placed 2 years prior?... In this case LSU finished 1st and should have been scheduled to play whoever finished 1st in the big12 in 2018.. But I guess thats not how it works anymore

Essentially, the challenge is a made for TV event. Thus, they (ESPN) chooses the matchups based largely upon preseason projections of how they teams will fare. That's why the matchups aren't released until relatively late. If it were based upon a set formula then everyone would know the next year's matchups immediately after the season ended.
