Pat Henry - LSU had one NC in track before Henry got here and had a few SEC championships. The program was in a slump when Pat was hired and he helped turn the tide. His success is hard to argue against, however the nod goes to Bertman because of his shere dominance in a weaker program at LSU.
Actually, LSU had three track NC's before Henry got here. Bernie Moore won an NC with the men in 1933, and Sam Seemes won two NC's (indoor and outdoor) in 1987 with the women.

Oh wait. You're serious?
It's Skip Bertman.

And Mac never ran off to chase some damn fool dream. He had his dream job: LSU.
Just look at this thread. No coach other than Skip has more good karma with LSU fans. Hell I would argue that Charlie Mac inspires MORE good feelings in the average LSU fan than Skip. (Because ADs tend to be bad guys to many.)
But yet, you are the only one to name him one of LSU's greatest, what does that tell you? When even homers aren't putting him up there? LSU ALWAYS had the resources to compete with Alabama, just as Florida always did. Both just needed a great coach to jump start the program. Charlie Mac was not it.

Being right isn't always popular. Being popular, or in the consensus, isn't always right. But all of you Bertman fans (and I greatly respect what he did for LSU, particularly during the darkest time for our lifeblood, the football program) and Pat Henry fans (again, a standard of excellence that is difficult to imagine, to comprehend) ignore the fact that, ultimately, football is the only significant player in the athletic department at LSU. Football casts a huge shadow, literally and figuratively over the entire institution.
Football coaching is real coaching. Pat Henry was a great track coach, maybe the best ever, anywhere. Bertman was a great baseball manager, but, again baseball management is not really coaching. (Pitching coaches do coaching, as do the batting coaches).
But football is a war. It's one part athletics, and two parts combat. And Mac was our best coach, with all of the connotations that word carries with me, in the only sport that really matters at LSU.

for me it has to be Charles McClendon b/c he was the coach at LSU when I went to my 1st game
but to be truthfull it has to be skip or little nicky

If Mac wasn't a great coach (and certainly opinions vary) then LSU has never had, and probably will never have a great football coach.
You realize that people were putting Arnsparger on this list, and not Mac. Explain the reasoning behind that?

He was not a coach, but he brought in all the ones who turned LSU atheletics into prominence on a national basis. He brought in Arnsparger, Bertman, Henry, etc. LSU owes a lot to .....

Nick Saban. Not just for wining a NC, but for turning around a dog and having the vision to build a program and not just a good team (i.e. get the support to bring mediocre facilities to probably the best in the country).

As far as most are concerned, there are three big time sports at LSU (football, baseball, and basketball). Skip Bertman is the only man in any of the three to bring his program to the clear, dominant #1 in the sport.
While he's a grumpy old man IRL, he gets my vote.
Dale and Saban would be next, simply because I believe they were the best coaches to ever coach their respective sport.

Is this a real question?
think of lsu before saban.....a baseball school
think of lsu after saban....a football school
football does more than baseball
