I put football above track...but yeah, Henry was damn strong.

Most consistent? Perhaps. But he could never achieve above expectations, and occasionally he would achieve below them. A great coach at LSU would have a better record against Bryant, even considering how great Bryant and his Alabama teams were.

well, if we are weighing sports with their importance to the school than saban > skip
if not, henry > saban

Les Miles. Critical 4th down decisions, fake field goal, fake punt decisions. Some call it balsy, but it's happened so much that I say they are well executed and timed perfectly! We would not have not been national champs last year without those gutsy calls.

How about this formula:
number of campionships x attendence at event + tv appearances = rating as a coach.
number of campionships x attendence at event + tv appearances = rating as a coach.

I have to agree with you. I liked Cholly Mac, thought he was a great man and a good coach, but I don't rank him as great. Dietzel pulled the LSU football program off the bottom and much like someone more recently left for his "dream job" with the program well stocked to make another run at a national championship.
Cholly Mac couldn't win consistently against any of the really top tier programs. He was 2-14 against BAMA, 1-3-1 against Tennessee, 0-2 against UGA (he barely had winning records against Ole Miss - program in decline during most of his tenure, and Florida - program not yet achieving.
He was a good coach, LSU was fortunate to have him, but can't really say he was anywhere near the best ever.

Daddy Dale is the winner for getting the most out of his team. Just look at the Final Four team.
Of course, he is also the winner for getting the least out of his team when he actually has talent.

I have to give Brady a little credit on that front too, LSU had some of the worst talent in the SEC in the very early Brady years, but they would give almost everyone a good fight.

the only undefeated coach in LSU history, he never lost a game while being the head coach LSU.....EVER!
I don't think this is true, I believe we have a few other coaches that are undefeated, but I could be wrong. But calling someone that was undefeated when they coached in one game the best coach ever.
BTW: I know this was a joke. Just had to reply.
Dana Bible back in 1916 went undefeated in 3 games with 1 win and 2 ties no losses.
Bo Rein was head coach and never had a loss, granted he also never had any wins. Sad loss for LSU.

you have got to be kidding....
they could not shine Dale Brown's or Skip Bertman's shoes.....
Dale and Skip
put LSU and their sports on the map.
LSU football was already known.
not even a close one.
A lot of other good coaches have done that in second tier sports.

Sorry, have to call bullshite on this whole paragraph. LSU over forever is 23-44-5 against Bama. However, Bama certainly peaked under Bear Bryant. Bryant coached Bama for Mac's entire tenure. Bryant only lost three or more games three times during that run. While Mac was at LSU, Bama had an undefeated season, and nine 1 loss seasons. So bullshite on that one, should have beat Bear, nobody beat the Bear consistently.
Tennessee, LSU is 7-20-3, so Mac did as well as the program, but didn't exceed our usual rate against Tennessee, so bullshite. So he lost 2 games to UGA - is that worse than losing 1 game to UAB? Florida had a big surge there for a while. Ever hear of a kid named Steve Spurrier, Heisman Trophy winner? And I can tell you, that even when Mac's teams dipped a little in the mid late 70s, we still routinely kicked Florida's arse.
And Ole Miss, Mac had to coach against them with Johnny Vaught - Ole Miss' Bear Bryant (albeit at the end) AND freakin' Archie Manning, the Rebel of Rebels.

Mac did as much for LSU as Dietzel did when Dietzel was the head coach.
Here's a funny story: 6,3,6,0,7,7,0,18,6,0 & 0
That's how many points Mac's defense gave up in the 1958 season. Don't get me wrong, when Dietzel took over, LSU was bad, but Mac's defense was better than Dietzel's offense by 1958.
And Mac never ran off to chase some damn fool dream. He had his dream job: LSU.

Tier One
These people MADE their sport and LSU
1) Skip Bertman Baseball
2) Pat Henry Track
3) Dale Brown Men's B Ball
4) Bernie Moore Track
5) Sue Gunter Women's B Ball
Nick Saban brought attention to LSU but LSU Football was already known (even if it had gone thru a rough period)
Charlie Mac gave LSU more recognition than Saban...
even you young ones want to only give credit to what's new.

Henry. Not a big fan of track but just count the championships.

1.) Skip - Has as many NC as some programs over the entirety of thier existence. Led to changes in the game to take the gorilla out of the ball game. Took over a program that was in really dire straits and made it a true powerhouse that lasted through two preceeding coaches.
2.) Pat Henry - LSU had one NC in track before Henry got here and had a few SEC championships. The program was in a slump when Pat was hired and he helped turn the tide. His success is hard to argue against, however the nod goes to Bertman because of his shere dominance in a weaker program at LSU.
3.) Dietzel - 1st NC at LSU on a shorthanded team. Shorthanded as far as numbers, not talent and was also going against stiff competition as well.
IMO
