I´m an old offensive lineman ( a center at that) so I tend to watch very closely what the offensive line does. Most times I dont even watch the running back. I knew last year that we were in big trouble when the ULL defensive line was consistently knocking our starting line into the backfield. Take a look yourself if you can find the game to replay. Throughout the year, I saw the same thing, poor technique, many times poor effort, not enough poundage on the interior line. It certainly did not help that the opposing D´s did not have to respect JJ and the pass so could and did stack the box, making a bad situation worse.

That being said, I very closely watched the OL´s performance in the spring game. I know they were not playing against the full 1st team DL, but a DL that we mostly agree is pretty talented. What I saw I was very pleased with. Good blocking across the board and excellent effort, all in a line that is 15-20# heavier on average than last year. All very encouraging. Not defenitive, but certainly something positive to look at. The NC game will really tell the tale on how this line actually performs.

I distinctly remember watching Big Ben playing in 2002 and 2003. Excellent player, very smart, great technique, maybe not the meanest player LSU has ever had but certainly no pushover. So I think that what I saw in the spring game is his influence on the line. Again, we will see come the season but I am at least optomistic based on what I saw in the spring game.

Amazing that some think that even with some different players and coaches our O line can't get better. WTF?

Stop the fricking crying, the O like will be improved over last year and Ben Wilkerson will play a part in that. How big? who the hell knows at this point.

And you have to think that if his message doesn't get through verbally - he can still jump down and "show" them how it's done.

There's quite a difference between talking them through it and showing them through it.

That is great news. While most optimists seem to think the spring game is meaningless, let's hope they're wrong about that with regard to the OL play.

I think you have to be careful how you analyze a spring game, but it certainly (IMO) is easier to spot problems that to see potential strengths. The OL did look much better run blocking, but with Sheppard and Nevis out, you have to take that with a grain of salt. Also, Barksdale looked horrible pass blocking. Hopefully that says more about Montgomery than Barksdale. Ditto with Mingo on the other side.

I am certainly happy to see more beef on the line though.

Interesting, because I always felt the opposite. I was never really worried about the team not being able to do something in the spring game because there was time over the summer and Fall Camp to fix it, and a new class of recruits to help out, before we had to do it for real. On the other hand, when I saw our team demonstrate an ability to do something, I was usually encouraged by it because players rarely lose the ability in the fall to do something they were able to do in the spring. Not to say it doesn't happen, but it is rather unusual.

Why do you think it's easier to spot problems than to see potential strengths in a Spring Game?
