How and why did Skip let him get away? He was from Baton Rouge and blew up at NLU and had a good major league career.

Tommy LaSorda attended his wedding after the 2000 Olympics. That was pretty cool. The bride was a classmate of mine from Monroe. Great family.

I think he had some nagging injuries in high school that prevented him from being a big time recruit.

I was at that wedding as well. Remember Bob Uecker giving that unforgettable toast

Let’s get all this straightened out. He’s from St Amant. Was a better basketball player throughout his high school career. At least the second best pitcher on that St Amant team behind Jeremy Robinson (maybe further down the depth chart, but hell it was twenty five years ago).
Showed up at American Legion ball that summer pumping 92 outta nowhere with a pretty fresh arm (injury plagued senior year of high school if memory serves me correctly). That team finished second in the American Legion World Series and he was a stud.
Skip didn’t miss anything. Late bloomer, awesome career.

And until this season, Ben Sheets was the sole reason LSU had ever pitched a #1 in the first game of a 4 team regional. LSU couldn’t pitch down against ULM with Ben Sheets on the mound and had to pitch ace Kurt Ainsworth against him.

Then Smoke pitched down for ULM and they got eliminated by Southern

It worked out in the long run because it let Kurt come back against ECU on Monday after the rain delay and whip ECU.

And he also started a bunch of seniors that didn’t play that much that season against Southern and it backfired.

Actually it was a 6 team tournament to go to Omaha. I was at the 98 regional and the rain helped Kurt and sheets rest “enough” to go at it on Monday. We collected ticket stubs and passed them out to people without tickets. The box was rocking that day.
