I was in 7th grade growing up in Lafourche Parish when this magical season occurred. Didn’t go to South Lafourche but wish I was there for the ride. Unbelievable underdog story.

I played in that State Championship Game in Galiano in 1977. South Lafourche fumbled three times on their game winning drive, all recovered by Bonnabel only to have the big fat arse referee run over and yell no he was dahhhhhhn.
The week before we had to get through women at Acadiana spitting and throwing stuff at us to only play a State Championship game at a shite hole where they cut the coaches headset wires so many times they were useless, roped off half of the visitors side for home fans and we had spit and drinks hurled at both our team and fans. There’s a reason the LHSAA never played a home SCG on a home field again. Bonnabel’s QB had 350 yards of offense and wound up an All American DB at Alabama. Bear Bryant spike at our banquet.
Bobby and Ed have told me that Iif those two teams played 10 games, SL only wins one.
Three years ago there was a reunionand It was amazing how that game created lifelong friendships by those in the field, even though nobody from Harahan, Metairie or Kenner felt any love for Galliano.

To this day this still pisses me off

Ed Orgeron calls Pete Carroll the biggest influence of his coaching career.

He won two national championships with Carroll at Southern California.

Tommy Wilcox.

As the story goes, Bear Bryant “personally” recruited him and about 10 other high school All American QBs around the country telling them that they would get a shot at the starting QB spot as a freshman.

When they signed and showed up on campus, Bryant didn’t even know who they were and the coaches just assigned them to whatever position they wanted them to play.

Remember, this was long before recruiting services, the internet, high school all american games, or any thing like that. Kids had no idea (other than word of mouth) who any team signed
