This myth that the Bear was the only thing between Mac and two or three MNCs is just that.
Put your cursor over LSU above, click on the History button, peruse it, and you will realize it very quickly.

It's also how LSU does against everyone else compared to how Bama does against everyone else. 2011 is the lone season where LSU rolled through its schedule the way Bama mostly did in 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012.
that's just selective memory. Bama needed a blocked FG at the end to beat a crappy UT team at home in 2009. They only beat Arky in 2010 because Mallet crapped the bed in the 4th. Lets also not forget they got blown out by Utah in the Sugar Bowl and blew a 24-0 lead at home to Auburn in 2010. They've lost a home game 3 years in a row.
They beat up on crappy teams this year, so what? They haven't played as tough a schedule the last 2 years either, no where close.

Mac beat the bear back to back 69 & 70, this caused the bear to go spend some time with Darryl Royal and implementing the wishbone, Mac never beat him again but was close a couple of times.

How many mulligans did the Bear get?
More than a few, but he owned Mac throughout the 60s and 70s.
Well, even with the Mulligans, Saban doesn't "own" Miles, and he knows it.

Different system back then.
He won titles in 64 and 73 when he lost bowl games.
Sounds like a Mulligan to me.
Hell, under those systems, LSU would have won a title last year.

He also split a title in 78 with USC who beat them in B-Ham 24-14
That's a mulligan.

That's on top of 73 when they split with ND who beat them in the Sugar Bowl.
That's another mulligan.
Damn, that's FOUR. Wow. Thanks for the info H-Town.

It's not just how Les does head to head against Saban. It's also how LSU does against everyone else compared to how Bama does against everyone else.
And this year, LSU goes on the ROAD, beats aTm, while Bama loses to them AT HOME.
Yet no negatiger wants to go near this point as well.

2008 Bama needed OT to beat Miles' worst team.
2009 Bama needed corrupt officiating to put LSU away (AT HOME).
2011 Bama LOST AT HOME in their biggest game, then got a Mulligan and made good.
2012 Bama plays one of the weakest in-conference schedules of the top SEC teams, loses their biggest HOME GAME AGAIN, and is glorified with a trip to the SECCG game due to weak scheduling.
2013 I expect a repeat of 2011 or 2012.
With a set up like this, I bet there are many coaches/programs in America that could succeed....

"Gotta remember, the schedules were not padded by twinkie "rent-a-wins" like now. Add two or three of those modern cheap "w"s to Mac's record every season and his numbers would skyrocket. The closest thing to an annual "given" victory in those days was the Tulane game at the end of every season. Later on, even that got "iffy" after Mac left. "
Wrong. For a number of years Mac's team opened the season with A&M, Rice and Baylor. All were patsies and considered tuneups for the conference schedule.

Cholly Mac beat Bear twice-- '69 and '70. Jerry Stovall coached LSU to victory in Bear's last year.

Actually, no.
Just pointing out facts.
What is it with you rednecks and the phrase "butthurt"? You do realize that's so 2007, right?

I remember cupcakes on our schedule every year under Mac: Kansas State, Oregon, Oregon State, Indiana, Wake Forest all were pathetic back then. This was before the85/25 rules were in place.

The best shot would've been in 1973 when Bama came into TS with both teams 9-0 and came away with a 35-21 win. But even then, LSU was only ranked 7th going in.
Then got shut out by Tulane, and lost the bowl game to PSU.

Nope, we beat Wake 13-11. Also beat them in Mac's last game, the Tangerine bowl. They were coached by John Macovic in the 79 Bowl game. Beat Indiana 24-17, coached by Lee Corso, and Rich Brooks of Oregon 56-17.

That's why I wrote Bama "mostly" rolled through its schedules 2008-2012. Of course there were some tight games, just not many. Compared to LSU constantly playing close games against almost weekly every year but 2011. My thought is that most years under Miles LSU looks like this years version. And for the most part under Saban Bama has performed like 2011 LSU.

I made this point mid season and got my head ripped off. Glad to see yours going well.

Les has either been slow to realize or is just oblivious to the fact that STYLE POINTS/EYE TEST are/is REAL, and important. It will only become more important when there is a Committee deciding the four team playoff participants.

NO. there are HUGE DIFFERENCES. Mac has one hand tied behind his back due to many big dollar alumni preventing him from recruiting african americans. FACT. i was there. also, Mac got lazy as hell in recruiting and only recruited the I10 corredor from houston to pennsacola. other than the catholic schools, he basically ignored new orleans and damn near ignored north La. Mac was a brilliant defensive mind but just didn't have the hosses on offense to go all the way due to the above factors. no way you can compare that situation with miles. miles will recruit any where, any time and anybody worthy. he is conservative on offense but nothing like mac; miles will throw the ball if he has confidence in his qb.
