3.) Bunting with your 400 hitter with a runner already in scoring position with no outs

Less than 1% of all managers would try this.

If you want to move the runner over, have your right handed hitter try to hit to the right side of the field, but you never take the bat out of your best hitters hands, especially with a .264 hitter on deck.

I still don't understand why Ott even has a role on this team. He can't get good hitters out with his stuff, or lack thereof.

Dodd, that's fine. I'm not arguing execution. I'm arguing trusting Trey Watkins. I've never been a fan. Glad to see his average up to .260 from the paltry .234 he had up through last Saturday.

You can argue his OBP all day long but the kid isn't clutch at this point in his career.

You take the bat out of your best hitters hands and give it to one of your worst?
You can shove that small ball crap...that ain't playing the percentages!

And as for Ott... Last year and to this point this year, he has been very average and that isn't subjective. Eades had command of his pitches and is also a right hander. If he loses some control, you can still go to Ott. When he is hitting his spots, he is overpowering. Mainieri tried to out-think the room in this game and it cost him. Those points can't be argued.

Worst coaching move Ever!!! How do you bunt the best hitter on the team with no outs thats just stupid!!! Twice he tried that small ball crap and it backfired on us.. i just cant comprhend bunting a .416 guy with no outs i can understand if he was a .216 but over 400 thats insane!!

I disagree. He's a great reliever but the term closer needs to be retired with him. Spot relief would be best until he works his shite out.

Looks like we will have to win the next two or we up the rest of the year. Really thought we had th happened. Last year S. Carolina. This year Florid play second fiddle in the near future.

holy shite! You can't be serious. The best closer in LSU history didn't have his stuff tonight, or else you are saying we are the best team in the country.

I take alot of positives from this... The older guys were the ones that made the mistakes and the young guys looked like studs. Much more promising than the other way around. Im not worried about ott and nola, they will get it together.

Ive played baseball all my life and i understand what coach was trying to do but i cant agree i think it was a stupid to bunt a .416 guy that just baffles me.. Even more knowing trey watkins on deck and he couldnt hit slow pitch!!! He should have let jones hit, im not saying the outcome would have been different but i cant buy into bunting your best hitter... To me that was a coaching error i think hes trying to play small ball alil to much.

The bunts are one thing, I'm indifferent and that can go either way.

But, to me the roll of the closer throughout all levels of baseball is way overplayed. This isn't a gut reaction, i've felt this way for years.

If you have a pitcher in there who is throwing well and primed to go another, why not save the "closer" til the other pitcher gets in trouble. Eades threw one solid inning and obviously could go more (being a starter). If we hadn't scored and the game had gone to extras, he would have been out there probably 5 or 6 innings. But since we took the lead coaches always feel obligated to put the game in the hands of the closer.

Great game though. Man, I can't wait to make it to the Box tomorrow night. I think we can take games 2 and 3.

Tough loss. Hopefully things will be learned about the team and these situations will not be repeated.

I understand your point but if he would have left eades in and he got rocked you would be saying the exact opposite.

So you're saying if JJ lays down that bunt and moves the runner he's gonna let Watkins swing? I doubt that, I'm betting if JJ laid it down then Watkins would have been put in a safety squeeze play

I'm not one of those people, but i know what you're saying. I eat my words when I'm wrong. Before the 9th started I told my buddy I hope they leave in Eades. Believe me, I'd rather coach be right than me.

edit for typo

I understand. Cpm is only human, he played the odds with someone who is usually reliable and it didnt work out.

IMO you have to give the ball to an experienced player in that position. If eades would have blown that he might be screwed up for AWHILE, ott will shake it off.

I hope so. We can't afford to have one of our few veteran arms to have a repeat of last year.

this team will be just fine

And for the record... as an astros fan I started taking this position on closers when Lidge tried to blow the '05 postseason

Agreed. The young guys played their asses off, I think this team will gel and be really good sooner than later.

All the pieces are there we just need to put them all together.

On a side note, everyone is bitching about the bunting but I think paul has done a great job adjusting to the new bats and implementing some small ball, sure its not what we like to see and it doesn't always work, but I think going forward we will need it.
