Even if the offense is struggling against this defense, it's good that they have a great defense to go up against in practice, it will just make them better.

I agree. The one caveat is that we really don’t know that the defense is great. We think they are but that’s based on them beating up on the offense. What if the defense is average and the offense is bad? I don’t think that’s the case but it’s certainly a possibility.

however, les' 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense required a great defense.

It also helped a defense. When the offense moves slow and burns clock, the defense is on the field less. I would love to see the yards per play numbers in 2013. I think you'd find that they weren't great. Not anywhere near 2023 level of bad but not as good as 21st in the country. I think they were protected by having a good offense that sustained a lot of drives.

I don't think the defense climbs that high...and I don't think the offense falls that low.

I think if LSU's defense is in the top 15-20, the offense will be good enough to win every game. Maybe somewhere in the 15-20 range itself

I don't see how this could be true. If the offense is Top 20 and this defense is kicking their arse every day, wouldn't that mean the defense should be top 10ish?

On the flip side, if the defense is top 20 then wouldn't them kicking the O's arse everyday mean the O probably isn't top 20?

Obviously drawing these conclusions are not exact given that the defense has the advantage in fall camp and the offense isn't exactly gameplanning but still, at this point it looks like the D will be better than the O. Which is perfectly fine with me because I know Nuss will manufacture points.

One thing is not debatable, this is the most talented and deepest defensive roster Kelly has had at LSU. I saw the the progression of Mckinley and Breaux at DT. Reilford at DE. We have tape on Pyburn and Peyton and Gooden. I saw the development of Weeks and Keys. We know what Perkins can do. I saw the development of Stamps and Woodland. We have the talent and then you add the highly rated recruiting class and a couple of other transfers and there is no doubt this is the best personnel Kelly has had on defense since he's been here. And I will keep beating this drum but what we haven't had the last couple of years is LEADERSHIP on the field. That is the most important thing that has been missing but we have it now and it will go a long ways to making the talent on this defense mesh as one.

Myself, I am tired of third and long equals move the chains for a first down

5.1 yards/ play, good for 29th nationally per Sports Reference

2023 was 6.1 yds/ play, which is at 109th.

Ok that’s interesting. I thought it would be worse. The offense that year was good, wonder how a top 30 defense derailed everything?

The defense was average by many statistical measures last season. That was a big improvement from being sub 90 pretty much across the board. It’s safe to infer that we should see some improvement over last year from young players who had to play early, and there were many.

It’s also objectively true that we have improved the overall talent level, experience and depth of the defense. Between younger returning players maturing, the portal class, and a strong recruiting class with a few potential impact players, all of the above have improved. That’s really not debatable just looking at the two rosters. We also have a DC who, in a similar situation at Mizzou, produced a major improvement in year 2.

I don’t think it’s realistic to expect greatness, but it’s is absolutely realistic to expect another solid improvement. That alone based on the above should take this defense from the 50s-60s in many stat categories to the 30s. If the pieces do all fall into place, then this defense has the talent potential to be top 3-5 in the SEC. Again, we can’t expect that, but the ceiling is much higher than it’s been since 2019.

Someone listened to Mascona yesterday, I heard that too. I don't actually remember being as up in arms about the 2013 defense as he says we all were, I do remember being so in 2008.

I would gladly take 21st this year but I honestly think the talent is there to do even better.
