Yep... he has experience running this D with tweeners / undersized players and what not. And its worked very well for them.

I still think the day Steele was hired, Saban was on the phone with Jimbo saying, "Jimbo, Jimbo, Jimbo, did you get a load of who these idiots hired...?

One question for you: Where do you see Key lining up in the 3-4 one gap?

What does the weakness tend to be in this kind of D?

OLB pass rushing specialists.

Key will be on the side with the numbers advantage for the D going 1v1 with an OT or a RB has to pick him up. Either way, its good for us. He will be in that "mismatch" role IMO.

Perfect role for him. I could see him getting 12+ sacks next season.

You can be caught in a slant or stunt if the right play is called. And if the ball carrier gets past the initial wave of defenders, he could run for a while considering the "attacking" nature of this scheme. Must tackle well for this scheme to be really effective.

It puts a lot more stress on the opposing offenses play calling, but if you get caught with the wrong scheme and he calls the right play, you can give up some big chunks of yards. But thats for any scheme though. And Aranda is an extremely smart DC and knows how to game plan and prepare for an opponent and can call a great game.

Im honestly thrilled with the hire and think itll be a game changer for us.

Yep... and since this style of D can dictate how the offense blocks, you can find your mismatch and constantly exploit it.

And with the talent he has at LSU, exploit it he will. The talent he will coach at LSU is a gazillion times better than anything he had at Hawaii, Utah St, or Wisconsin, where he always produced top defenses.

Yep...

Best part about this scheme is that it lets your athletes BE athletes. They arent reading and then reacting. Its all action and attacking. And we have plenty of those athletes here.

One question I have, forgive my ignorance:

Does this mean we'll start using a nose tackle?

I see that in both diagrams but we haven't used a nose tackle in a long time.

If you guys recall, this defense gave our offensive line fits for 3 quarters last year. Remember, they were coming into the season having replaced a lot of their best defenders, and with several question marks. Size and strength wise, they did not match up well against us. However, their speed gave our line fits when we tried to run power, because they couldn't figure out who to block with all of the motion and disguising.

Yep and from what I remember, they had lost their entire front 7 defense plus 2 in the secondary the year before.

It wasn't until we opened up and starting passing more and they wore down a bit that we had any success

Actually no that's not what happened. They lost their two best players right in the middle of the defense during the game and then they just parted like the red sea.

If Aranda brings this scheme to LSU, which he will (no idea why he wouldnt?)... then yes we will be using a NT.

Will we run this though? Knowing we will be thin at LB next year?? Just curious how that affects the D we run. Especially also knowing we will have solid D-line talent next year.

and if it is truly like Wade Phillips defense, our other OLB should rack up sacks as well. I wouldnt be surprised if that is Lewis Neal most of the time.

Godchaux would likely be our NT in a 1 gap. Flanked by Herron and possibly LaCouture
