I don't remember him ever seeing the field the one year he was there.
And Jim Smith doubled as baseball coach. His main job was equipment manager for the fb team.

I went in '81 or '82 with my dad to an afternoon game on a weekday. Only a few people were there. After the first inning or so, the concession guy came up to us in the stands and said, "Hey, if y'all want anything to drink, you need to get it now. We're closing the concession stand due to poor attendance."
My how things have changed.

I went to a couple of games when I was there BS (before Skip). Skip was hired during my time as a student there but some friends and I would go hang out on Saturday afternoons in the Spring. It was just the grandstands then. I also remember going to one of the first regionals that we hosted and walking up the day of the event and buying tickets and sitting in the grandstands (seems like Tech may have been in that regional, not positive). Not sure what year that would have been.

Went to several games with my Dad in the 60s. I don't remember much about it except that we always sat on or near the front row about one-third of the way from home to first base.
I was a student '75 to '79, and I don't think I ever went to a game.

Yeah, I went to a few in the late 70s early 80s.
Never more than a couple of hundred folks. It was just the main grandstand, and the bleachers were wooden. Folks used to bring in ice chests, and picnic lunches, without anyone batting an eye.
The most vivid memory, though, was that Big Red used to go to all the games, and would belt out a loud military style "HUT, HUT, HUT, HUT" anytime an opposing coach would go out to the mound. Good stuff.

We moved to LA in the summer of 85 and by the beginning of 86, I was working for the circus (aka, the Louisiana Legislature). Spend all day moving bad boys' hands off my knee, wander over to State St, get a bite of supper and then on to the Box to watch a few innings of something as pure as baseball before heading back downtown to face a few more hours of the absurd. How many times have I asked myself the "wish I'd bought stock in Coca-Cola" question: why didn't I lock up some seats behind home plate back then? In a couple of years when I've finished paying my kids' tuitions, I plan to mortgage my soul for a pair of season tickets somewhere in that vicinity.

there were always about 300 fans attending the game, if the visiting team could bring 250 fans

Yep, my father played for Smith. College baseball back then was not big anywhere. They called Smith, "Bimbo", I believe. And I was told that he was crap for a baseball coach by my dad.

Smith's a nice guy, was just stuck in a bad spot. Don't blame him for being placed into something that he was not suited for. Not like he could say no.

He was definitely a great guy from all accounts. He was definitely in a bad spot.
