Any other baseball coaches start an entire 2nd unit for a game?

LSU didn't play a complete new 9, because Bregman doesn't need a rest. But guys like Fraley and Hale have been playing too much lately and they needed a rest. We did this the very first weekend against Grambling and got away with it by smashing Grambling pitching for 6 runs. Does anyone know of any other college teams that insert 7 or 8 backups into the starting lineup at any point?

I don't really follow other teams' midweek games, but I would doubt we're the only ones to do so. I didn't have a problem with it... Until we were down 5-0

Where are you getting that was the reason they didn't start? Are you making that up?

Mainieri in his pre-game radio interview with Hannigriff said he wanted the guys who have not played regularly to see some meaningful playing time so he could evaluate their readiness for the post-season when teams might have to play several games in a short period of time.

ETA: Rosters are limited in the post-season so those who PM doesn't expect to play will be sent off to their summer league teams early.

Aside from Dean's awesome attempt at turning 2, I thought they looked great in the field. Foshay just didn't have it. At all. That was 4 of their runs right there.

I'm sure I did make it up. But I have never seen a college baseball coach that starts a nearly complete unit of backups for a normal game. I have seen many put 2-3 backups in to start, while resting the starters. I have seen many sub in for the starters after 5 innings or so and the home team has jumped out to a comfortable lead. I've just never seen it done so drastically like Mainieri has done several times in the past. It sort of sets the tone for the game and gives the players the sense that this game isn't to be taken seriously.

So you're just willfully trolling? Okay, got it.

I'm out.

Sweet. We are fighting for regional host/top 8 national seed, and yet we decide to have open tryouts for postseason roster spots instead of focusing on winning the ball game.

The score I saw in this morning's writeup of the game must be wrong. It showed LSU won the game. Maybe you can tell us what the final score was since the paper had it wrong?

PM already knows several of those players that started last night won't be on the postseason roster.

Who said anything about the final score? Did you skip over the part that read "LSU trailed 6-1 through 5 and a half innings before inserting their starters." Even you can't deny that Paul Mainieri did not send his best lineup on the field for the first 5 innings.

I'm with Choupique19. You should never start a second stringer. They are second string for a reason. Why let them play? If they want to play, then they need to get better. The only reason they should ever see the field is in case of an injury. Get good or sit, amirite choupique?

Once again, Choupique shows that he knows way more about baseball than Maineri. Keep up the good work.

Where did I say that a backup should never play? Where did I say that a backup should never start?
Where did I say that a starter should never get a day off?

I thought my point was clear that subbing in one or two spots at the start could be okay, but starting 8 backups at one time is not a good idea. Do any other coaches do it? Nobody has chimed in yet with that answer.

I seriously doubt if they needed a rest.

I don't have a huge problem giving others a chance to play in increments. However I question the wholesale sitting of most of the starting lineup when we're in the hunt for a national seeding.

Should we pitch Nola in game 1 of the regional too?

It was tounge-in-cheek. Fraley has only been starting for about 2 and a half weeks, and even then he sits vs lefties. He needs the at bats.
