Why did Pistol change from #44 to #7? I'm looking at buying a throwback jeresy and was wondering if there was some significance to the number change

Isn't it his #23 jersey that is retired by LSU? If so they may actually be the one you want. The #7 jersey is retireed by the Jazz and the Hornets so not sure how significant #44 was to him. Was #44 maybe his freshman jersey number?

The 44 jersey was about him averageing 44 points a game while at LSU. That's why he chose it.

I'm wanting a Jazz jersey. He wore both numbers while with N.O. Leaning towards 44, but still curious why he changed

I remmember hearing he chose number 7 because it was his apartment number. Very insignificant.

all I could find:

quote:

In honor of his brother. His brother wore No. 23 in high school. So when Pistol Pete was in LSU, he used the No. 23 to honor his brother. When he entered the NBA, the No. 23 was already taken by his Atlanta Hawks teammate Lou Hudson. So he chose the No.44, his college scoring average, when he started playing in the NBA.

Doubtful. But why change?

He lived in a house in Metairie when he made the change.
Pete made a new commitment prior to that season with the Jazz, his first as an All-Pro. He worked harder in the off season, particularly on the weights. The number 44 was always associated with his college scoring average. He wanted a fresh start. Lucky 7 seemed like a safe choice. I worked for the Jazz at the time.

Those were the good ole days sitting up in those $1.50 Terrace seats for Jazz games. Yes, that's what I said. A buck fifty. We had a blast up there. Jazz game, then off to Bud's Broiler for a hickory sauce burger and fries, donuts (Lee's) right before getting on the bridge and then back home across the Causeway to Mandeville.
