The biggest criticism of Hawthorne came after those untelevised, nail-biting SEC basketball games this year. I remember most of those posters conceding that he is still good for baseball because it's a slower game.

You have to say the score frequently for the listeners who are just joining the broadcast. I don't like doing the addition in my head anyway

Ah, I see we have found Captain Perfect

of course Jim makes mistakes, but I would rather listen to his energy and mistakes than freaking CH rocking me to sleep

You have to understand they have 2 different styles. I really don't have a problem with either one. I also like Patrick Coogan's color commentary.

I love to listen to Hawthorne. I have listened to him all my life and I will be very sad when he stops being the "Voice of the Tigers".

YOU are the freakin' idiot... you must be Hawthorne's left nut sack.. what a freakin' dumbass loser... get a freakin' life and crawl back in your birth pouch!!!... if you truly believe what you just wrote in that post then you are truly hopeless, time to stop taking up space in the food chain, moron!!!... 2-3 of every 10 words that come out of Hawthorne's maouth are just flat incorrect... if you find that good enough then there are some brand new schools in bumfreak Ashkanistan that will gladly welcome you with open arms!!!...

Do you need to hear the freaking score every other batter??

I need legitimate information, not the mistakes that come out of hawthorne's mouth all the time!!... hawthorne's description of the game is just unbelievable... every time he makes a mistake, which is at least every other sentence, the shocked silence from the other broadcaster is profound... sometimes you can hear the other broadcaster whispering the correction to him, if he doesn't just blurt out the correction himself, minutes after the fact!!!... I'll take Charlie any day of the week... at least he is awake, aware, and correct!!!

You will miss him when he is gone. He is probably the "dean" of SEC voices. It won't be the same without him.

It definitely wont be the same without him. Who knows LSU fans might actually enjoy getting good information and a first rate announcer

I agree with you, but we may be in the minority on this board.

I agree with you. Charlie bores me to tears when I listen. I find I can only listen to him for about 15 minutes before I have to turn it off because its putting me to sleep. JH really is more exciting, even though he sometimes makes some mistakes.

why have the same announcer for all three major sports? do other programs in the SEC use the same for all three?

Concerning the score being announced so often:

CH has probably picked up something attributed to the Reds' legendary former broadcaster Red Barber. A fan once wrote to him that he never knew the score if he turned on the game in the middle of an inning--sometimes having to wait til the end of the inning, or longer to know the score. Barber got his wife's 3 minute "hourglass" egg timer and brought it to the park. And for the next thousand years, he used that egg timer to announce the score every three minutes.

Red Barber--now that's a baseball announcer.

a base hit, doesn't necessarily mean a single!

JH over CH any day of the week, i think CH is better as a color guy

I think jim's forte is baseball. I've always thought so. He makes very few mistakes, fewer than football anyway, when he does baseball. CH and jim make a great team in the press box for baseball imo. Jim is the color guy and charlie is the stat man.

I like the Hawthorn - Hanagriff 1-2 punch FWIW.

It is going to be a sad day when Hawthorn isn't doing play by play any more. Hanagriff knows his shite but, he doesn't bring the same excitement as Hawthorn. After DJ hit the walk off single yesterday and Charlie was yelling "Tigers win!!" it just wasn't the same.

+1 I don't listen to the broadcast for the announcer's excitement, I listen to know what is happening in the game.

Jim calls the game with the passion of an LSU guy who happens to have a great voice.

You can sense his excitement and his desire for LSU to do well. I can overlook a few mess ups with a guy who wants nothing for the school but the very best.

Maybe CH could have a button in the booth of Hawthorne yelling, "Tigers Win!" that he could press at the end of the game.
