Sam Montgomery

1A. Simon - it's a combination of a couple things. His measurable will be great as long as he times well in the running. he is going to play the money CB position in our defense. he has graded out as well or better than PP and Mo in the playing time he has gotten. he will benefit from the legacy in front of him. CBs with length and speed who can really cover well are not common and will always go higher than most. 1B. Mingo - he is the prototype for a 3-4 OLB in the NFL. He would have gone in the 1st this year. A very good college DE that will be a total badass in the NFL. he will get the attention of the folks who like college production players AND those that like measurables. 2. Reid - two words...Hybrid Safety. He can hit and he can cover. If he runs well he be a 1st rounder. 3. Montgomery - I am afraid he is a tweener in the NFL. I don't think he is as able to move to OLB as Mingo. There are successful guys at his size at DE in the NFL but they are mostly pass rushing guys like Dumervil and the Colts DEs. I think a team that plays a defensive system like that might take him in the first, but he might drop more than most think. 4. TM7 - I think projecting is way tougher than we think. The question will be: How much does his production outweigh his small stature? On the one hand he can play exclusively slot corner in the NFL. It's a passing league and he won't asked to cover outside receivers as much. On the other hand...he is a small guy for an every down nfl corner. I know there have been small successful corners...Tyrone Poole comes to mind...bunt not a lot of them. I tend to think he will be successful...but a late 1st or 2nd round pic.
I like what you're saying except Montgomery. He isn't a tweeter IMO. He is a prototypical 4-3 DE. He had a first round grade this year. He could be a 5-10 guy if he has another season like this year. This season was his first full season in college. He's a beast.

So Simon, who led the SEC in pass deflections, is a 'B corner' in the SEC...

6'3" corners are rare in the NFL, and they know it.
once they get them in drills they see things that they cant do that shorter CBs can.
Not that Simon isnt a good player. He'd prob be a better safety though. He covers the deep ball well.

Agreed.
He'd be a great FS. He still could go in the first round and will be our next great cover corner, but he's a bigger risk than Mingo and Montgomery.

Yep...he is great in the open, solid at the corner.

Well, perhaps our understanding of what is the prototype differs. I think the 4-3 prototype is Peppers or Jared Allen. Those guys weigh north of 275-280 lbs. Even the notable speed guys in the league like Dumervil and Freeney are in the 270s. The closest thing I can compare Montgomery to weight wise is Umenyiora with the Giants.
This is not to say that Montgomery won't be a high pick or that he will be unsuccessful. It is just that if his weight is at his listed 245...it might be a concern that could drop him and puts him in the tweener category.

Montgomery is perfect size for an OLB in a 3-4.
being a tweener is a good thing these days
damarcus ware, shawn merriman, von miller, lamar woodley, etc etc all were tweeners. Just about all great pass rushers in 3-4s are tweeners

Big Sam
Mingo could go that high if he keeps producing/getting better. He'll light it up at the combine, I'd guess

This may very well be true. Montgomery just doesn't look the part of OLB to me. Just never thought of him as being that kind of a player. Not an ability thing...just an eye test thing. You could very well be right though. I hope so. I just always considered him more likely to try to put on more weight and stay at DE.

All good but no doubt Mingo should easily be top 10. Gets bigger and better every year. Major athletic ability. He is like a WR/DB playing DE. He ran down James from behind in the backfield. And he was 210 when he got to Lsu. Now he is what 250? And after another year should be close to 265? I am guessing on his weight. Also if I remember correctly he won the 200 and 400 meters in state championship in HS. Unbelievable talent.

how can you say Simon is overrated? He just doesn't get much attention bc he is playing with talent like Mo. Simon IMO is going to be an early first rounder next year, maybe not top 10, but he certainly has the potential

check him out(from his ywitter). He's not overly big.
as an OLB he'd mainly be a pass rusher. Its just beneficial to him because he will be better in space because of his size in the NFL.
he could probably do both. But with the way so many teams are using the 3-4, they are targeting players with his exact skillet to play on hte outside

Montgomery is most comparable to a DeMarcus Ware. The NFL D is changing to the 3-4 so those guys can get on the field. Smaller than your 4-3 book end but faster than the ILBs. Hes a top 10.
Simon has a high ceiling no doubt, just need to see him get a little more physical and just more PT which we will see.
Eric Reid will most likely be the top S coming out whenever he decides to, but remember Eric Berry and Landry are the only S that were taken in the top 10 recently that I can think of. Plus, safeties usually drop comes draft day. But I can see Reid having a 10+ year career, not just because of his skills, but because of his smarts out there.
Mingo is the 1st of his kind. With the development of the freak TEs where they are too fast for LBs and too big for DBs to guard, you need a guy like Mingo out there. We have so much talent right now its unreal

I'm excited to see what Mingo and Montgomery have in store for next season. They had 8 and 9 sacks respectively this past season as sophomores and have the chance to truly explode their junior season with even more playing time available with Ken Adams graduating. What they both have working against them is size, both will get the "not big enough to play the run" tags at 6'5, 240 and 6'4, 245 as DEs, even though both had high tackles and TFL numbers this past season. Their one big hope is those 3-4 teams that can see them as rush OLBs though.

Which makes no sense considering he's not even our starting LT, but rather our RT.
