I listened to the same press conference you did. I also listened to the Q&A portion where he was directly asked if his neck issues are the cause of all this. He said no, it was among the reasons that led to this but he couldn’t say what percentage impact it had. He didn’t elaborate on the others (which I’m sure are stress of the job, not winning anymore, pressure to do the same, age, etc) Feel free to listen to it again. Per Paul himself, his neck is not the ONLY reason he’s retiring, which is what I responded to.
I also listened to the whole thing and the Q&A session. The question was related to his decision to retire, not his inability to still coach. Go listen again. You’re arguing about something no one is contesting. He said the neck pain wasn’t the only factor in his decision to retire, but it was a big one. He didn’t say he wasn’t able to be a winning coach. He didn’t elaborate but “you’re sure” it was not winning anymore? Okay. Ha.

So like I have said multiple times

Actually he kind of did. He said he didn’t think he was winning at the level he should but didn’t think he was a bad coach.

Among other things, yes. When a guy goes on for 10 minutes about how much he hates losing...do the math. I mean damn, you think Paul was oblivious to how much we were struggling to win? Did you not find it odd he ducking apologized about not winning more here if it was ONLY the neck holding him back? I mean god damn, I compliment the guy for exiting with grace and class but you and Lunatik can’t help yourselves but to argue semantics. Get over it

I don't think it's semantics.
It sounds to me like his neck pain was causing all of the issues he was describing for not being able to do the job.

No it really isn’t. You’re not following very well. The question he was asked was specifically related to his decision to retire. He never said that he didn’t have the ability to win anymore which you keep implying that he said or implied.

Those weren’t his exact words, but he didn’t say anything about retiring because of that.

No, what you did was make something up and repeated it as if it was actually said (it wasn’t) and true. I’m not of the belief that you just assume something because that’s what you want to believe. I’d rather let someone speak for themselves and the fact is that he never said he knew he didn’t have the ability to coach well or win anymore and never implied that had anything to do with his decision to retire.

No matter how much you have a feeling, he didn’t say he felt he couldn’t win anymore. You yourself said that he didn’t elaborate and so you took it upon yourself to do it for him and say what you feel it is. I prefer to let someone speak for themselves, but you do you.

I really enjoyed hearing how deeply he and his family love and respect LSU. Obviously this situation is different as he’s retiring, but typically when a longtime coach leaves, you get a canned response. It was nice to hear some genuine honesty.

Yes I know that. There’s other people that refuse to believe that he chose of his own free will to retire because of health issue (the major factor) and would rather believe he realized he can’t win and was going to be fired if he didn’t retire.

It’s in the context of other things he said
quote:
My family knows that, I'm not very good at losing. Unfortunately I've had a lot of practice at it but I'm still not very good at it. But it's who I am, you know. You put so much into it and you want to win.
quote:
You know, this job is totally encompassing. It's with you 365 days a year 24 hours a day. I'm looking forward to smiling a lot more and laughing a lot more and being around my family and engaged with my family on Mother's Day. I don't want to be like the person over there in the corner worrying about who is tomorrow's starting pitcher instead of being engaged with my family, and I'm hoping it will feel a lot better when I'm not stressed out all the time.
quote:
The neck pain, is that really ultimately just what did it, the amount of pain and chronic headaches you've been dealing with this year and throughout the last three years? PAUL MAINIERI: It's been a lot. It's been a big factor. I can't say it's the only factor. It's been a big factor.
quote:
If I'm not the baseball coach, and the stress of feeling like, you know, you've got it all on you, I'm hoping that's what it was and that by not being the baseball coach, it will feel better.
Sounds to me like he knows he’s not able to win like he wants to, that he hates losing, that the pressure cooker of this job is exacerbating the situation, and that, coupled with his neck hurting and not getting better has resulted in an adverse effect in his day-to-day life and job and therefore acknowledging it’s time for someone who can provide the program with who he feels the program and kids deserves, something at his age and condition he is unable to provide any longer. I think you, for whatever reason, are taking this as a slight to him. It’s not at all. I think it’s admirable and shows a lot of grace and humility and that it’s very difficult for someone to do. But I don’t really have to take many inferences at all. I can take the totality of all his comments he actually made to come to that conclusion.

Fascinating. I read all of that and got that he thinks his neck will feel better if he stops coaching and having to deal with the stresses that come along with it.
Amazing how people see things and think differently.

Fair enough. I didn’t take his comments to mean he felt like he couldn’t win anymore. I felt more along the lines of what Lunatik was saying that the pain is what causes the job to be more difficult, but not implying that he didn’t feel he knew how to do it anymore. Maybe we were just speaking past one another.

Yeah I’m noticing more and more how two people can watch or read the same things and see two totally different things.

That's the best part of this board. When you can discuss those things rationally with people it's super interesting. When it turns into a pissing match is when it gets stupid.
