So it has nothing to do with who they hired after winning a NC? It all has to do with how long they waited?
Yes, Miami waited until Coker had taken the program down to the point where they lost 40-3 in the Peach Bowl and then went 7-6 the following year. By that time, the damage was done and they had a major rebuilding project on their hands.
Tennessee waited until it had been a full 10 years since they had won the SEC title, and seven years since they had even sniffed at national championship contention. By that time, again, the damage was done and they had a major rebuilding project on their hands.
Coker and Fulmer both rode their national championship credentials into several years of underperformance and the schools, thinking as many of you do, let them do it because they had "earned" the right by winning the national championship. Result: both programs were run into the ground and both have major rebuilding to do.
LSU is now in the position to avoid, or repeat, the mistakes Miami and Tennessee made.

At least Miami got 2 NCs out of Coker
They got 1. They almost got a 2nd.

May as well just stick with his mediocrity
51-15, 5 bowl games, 2 BCS bowl wins, 2 west titles, and a NC is mediocre in your book?

We are NOT going to hire a big name coach.
Our last two hires gave given us 100 wins, 3 SEC titles, 10 bowl games, 4 BCS bowls, and 2 NC.
And you are unhappy with those hires?
I'm thinking some of us are just plain unhappy people or perhaps a spoiled child like person.

Solid post. If LSU fails to challenge for the SEC championship for the 3rd year in a row, losing to Bama, Ole Miss, and Arky, then I think that Les may be shown the door. Something would need to be done to stop the bleeding, especially with one of Louisiana's best recruiting classes coming up. LSU needs to right the ship before Miles has a chance to sink it. If they wait until the damage is done, they will face a major uphill battle similar to what Tennessee and Miami are still going through years later.

Problem is the guy responsible for putting the program in position for those wins is no coaching the current BCSNC team to the West.
Look at Miles record the last 2 years once it was 100% his coaches, players and system.
And ask yourself this question - how many SEC teams would NOT trade their current head coach for Miles?

5-3 record in the SEC will NEVER get an LSU coach fired.
Les Miles 3-5 season in 2008 washes out all the goodwill from the 2007 national championship

you Chicken Littles are pathetic. Saban turned LSU around in 2 years. Tenn and Miami have struggled because of the coaches they've hired, not because they waited too long. I swear, I really believe that some of you morons would prefer that we hire coaches on a week to week basis.

I would hope so, but given the conservative passivity of the LSU administration and the propensity of some LSU fans to celebrate mediocrity as if it were excellence, who knows.

but alas if he loses four I think the machine will be started.

quote:This. Even the Negatigers need to be schooled on this point. Miles is never going to have a losing season. He's milquetoast, middle of the road, average. He will manage to always win at least 7-8 games a year. It's going to take a BOD and an AD with major balls to fire his arse.
As long as he recruits well, Miles could be a babbling idiot and still win 7 to 9 games for the rest of his career. and never get fired.

quote:Good post. It's HOW you do it, not what the record shows. Last year the team and coached looked like the 'Keystone Cops do NCAA football' out there, and despite a 9-3 record took major heat for it.
But if UNC & WVU turn out to be overrated duds, LSU goes 4-4 in the SEC, and then wins the Independence Bowl, is Miles going to be fired after a 9-4 season like that? I would say probably so.

Uh, what current BCSNC team to the West???

amen, brother. and ask the fans of all other s.e.c. teams what they think of miles. most of them answer, "im glad he coaches lsu and continues to coach them". or, "im glad he's not our coach." "you guys have a lot of talent, but you got miles as a coach". some of them know their football. i think these comments speak for themselves.
