3 keys from that LSU/USC Bball game...

1. Depth. LSU has none. Poa played roughly 3-4 minutes total. Del Rosario played a fair amount due to early foul trouble from Morrow and late foul trouble from Angel. She didn't play bad at all, but she's not ready for that kind of minutes against a player like Cardosa. Considering that she's a freshman who has a lot of work to do and Cardosa is the best big in college right now, I'd say she played pretty well. LSU's two combined for 4 points on 4 shots. South Carolina played 9 girls, and their bench provided 16 points on 10 shots. Towards the end of the game, SC starters had rested legs and were making jumpshots and driving right past LSU defenders, neither of which they were doing early in the game. I 100% believe that fatigue was a factor down the stretch. I'm pretty sure Flaujae never once left the game, HVL came out for 1 possession before Poa turned it over and she was sent back in, Williams sat for maybe 2 min when Poa was in the first time. Morrow sat for a decent bit of the 2nd quarter and never came out in the 2nd half. Angel played whole first half and ended up missing about 10 minutes of the 2nd half.
2. Foul Trouble. SC never got in foul trouble whatsoever. Only one player ever got 3, and that was a sub who only provided 2 points. There were 100% some very bad missed calls that should have been fouls against Cardosa and some of the SC starters, while there were some very soft ticky-tack calls against LSU. That being said, 2 of Angel's fouls came immediately after HVL turned the ball over on inbounds plays, and another came after HVL didn't get the ball to her early enough, help ended up getting over there, and Angel picked up a foul trying to get the ball. Those were all legit fouls and self inflicted.
3. LSU's x-factor scorers didn't score efficiently enough. HVL made a couple big shots when we needed them, but she was 5/13 shooting. She wasn't terrible by any means, but in order to beat SC, we needed her going. Mikaylah Williams was the bigger problem. She was incredible inefficient taking a bunch of step back 3s and shots that she is very capable of hitting, but was not hitting them at all. Some were desperation trying to bail out the offense when it stalled, but some were bad decisions. When she got going towards the basket, she wasn't bad. 5/18 isn't enough for her talent level. Morrow was efficient, and was great early on and then got in foul trouble and had to sit most of the 2nd quarter. In the 3rd quarter, she scored a couple times but was not a focal point of the offense. She was our best player tonight and didn't touch the ball near enough down the stretch. When she did touch it, we scored, whether it was her scoring or her drawing attention to get somebody else open. Flaujae wasn't bad on the offensive end, but playing against SC isn't good for what she does. She wants to get to the basket and finish there, which is hard as hell against a team like SC who is so good inside.
All in all, LSU's depth and foul trouble was what cost them the game when it was all said and done. Even with the 2 guards having bad nights shooting, there might be 2 teams in the entire nation that could have beat LSU tonight, and SC is one of them. It's not a terrible loss for LSU. LSU can see them again in the SEC tourney, and who knows what happens when it's tournament time. Like I said, there are very few teams in the country talented enough to match up with LSU, even with the depth issues...avoid those couple teams and this team can make another very deep run and bring the entire team back next year possibly while adding some depth to complete the team.

I agree with everthing you said. Losing Poole killed the depth. We are too top heavy and cannot afford foul troubel at all. I am also going to say...HVL is not as good as I thought she was.

I agree if the starting five stay healthy and Williams starts to play up in big games we will be tough to be beat. The balk went in and out the rim so many times tonight. But Williams was so off. And HVL killed us at end of first half

I don't think it's fair to say that HVL isn't as good as we thought or killed us in any way. If that was Kent, Velez, Poa, or even Poole getting all those minutes, be'd be in damn trouble. Van Lith is still a big time bucket getter but she's playing out of position and having to learn to share with 4 other big time bucket getters. She didn't have to do that at Louisville. It is what it is at this point, but she's a hustler and plays her arse off every game so I'm not going to speak too bad on her...she just had a few costly mistakes tonight and missed a couple shots we really needed her to make.

Not to mention Samia Smith (not sure if I spelled first name correctly, but y'all know who I'm talking about). She is the one who be subbing for Reese and Morrow. She was an impact player early on before she got hurt. Losing her was a killer for sure.

I agree with your assessment of this game. However, HVL is a grad transfer so she will be out of eligibility, won’t she? I could see everyone else returning, especially if we don’t repeat this year. They will make more NIL money than they would in WNBA.

I thought HVL had one more year, like a Covid year or something from her freshman year, but I could be wrong.

Loved Poole but she couldn’t shoot, was not quick and certainly didn’t contribute to our depth.

#12 Williams will be a game changer come tournament time, she was in HS this time last year.

She absolutely contributed to depth. She had deficiencies for sure. But she was tenacious and tough. That’s one of the things that this team needs more consistently. I think she would be contributing this year.

I mentioned this in another thread. High ball screens would have made a huge difference offensively. We were in a 1-4 set running the offense. USC had constant pressure on our point the whole game. This slowed the movement of the ball and kept LSU out of sync. By setting the pick it would have allowed penetration into the paint, thus allowing open shots from outside with the defense collapsing. It would have also produce possible fouls on USC in the paint. Just my two cents.

they weren’t calling fouls on usc

I do agree with that. She was tenacious and tough. Loved that about her.

I just looked it up. You seem to be correct. She will have another year remaining. We potentially return every member of the team.

Going forward they need to feed Morrow the more!

And add Smith back into the equation. But, we are really hurting for a true point guard, who makes smart decisions.

Ever since Smith went down for the season, I thought that would be the biggest factor in how far the team would go.
She was really starting to come into her own on both ends before she got hurt. She could spell both bigs for considerable minutes. She doesn't get mentioned nearly enough by the media. Rosario could be huge next year as well.

Can't really agree with the depth. As I've said to many folks on here before, SC's "depth" doesn't really materialize in their four close games. In each of the previous three and the game tonight, their starters played over 30 minutes each, save for Watkins and Kitts who always sub for one another. I don't believe that we had "tired legs" but they didn't. The starters minutes from tonight.........
LSU
Reese - 29 min
Morrow - 35 min
Williams - 38 min
Johnson - 40 min
Van Lith - 38 min
SC
Pao Pao - 39 min
Johnson - 36 min
Cardoso - 32 min
Hall - 30 min
Kitts - 22 min
That ain't a huge enough difference to have one team have "tired legs" and the other "fresh legs". We lost for a number of reasons, but depth really isn't it. Additionally, The three players that subbed for SC tonight didn't contribute much offensively or rebounding.
I think we'll be fine. Del Rosario played great off the bench tonight, but Poa sucked. We've got to get her to give us quality minutes off the bench. If we can go seven deep with an occasional eight, we'll be okay the rest of the season because we have the most talented starting five in the NCAA.

I think there’s still some upside in her shooting. Her entry passes to the post from the wing were so quick.
Turnovers will happen esp as a PG and a tough defense. She played well.
Wished she would have milked the clock for last second shot before half (SC instead got that 3 at the buzzer) and the 10 second backcourt violation was unforced. More mental/focus than anything imo. I imagine this won’t happen again.
