More often than not this is the case for a lot of teams, Saban included. He may have done different at bama with the giant elephant in the middle of the d-line but when he was at LSU and he want to 3 down lineman it was usually in passing nickel type sistuations.

4-3 against typical college offenses

3-4 against spread-type offenses

EDIT: And fwiw, my personal favorite is the 4-4-3, but you've got to have balls of steel to run that thing. It's crazy dangerous.

Chavis runs a 4-2-5.

Sort of. He runs a 4-3 that's modified enough to where he doesn't have to change to a nickel D in passing situations.

LSU seemed to experiment with this sparingly last year, and with good reason, as it didn't work very well. The UW game was the worst example, but it still didn't get that much better later in the year. I think it was mainly an excuse to get Nevis on the field as a NG and get the other DTs a rest.

you run a 3-4 when you don't have dlinemen that you can count on. because you can move lbs around and do more stunts in different gaps. you can blitz more, it does better to disrupt the offense.

if you have a solid defensive line, it's better to go 4-3, make your linemen still play a 2 gap scheme and play a zone or cover 1 behind it. like we did a lot in 03.

in my opinion

LBs are so important to a 3-4 and LSU history shows that the state doesn't produce large numbers at that position. stick with a 4-3 unless you can geta solid 8 LBs which LSU rarely if ever has done

Saban seems to have a good 3-4 system going

What the hell does it matter what he has going? Alot of other coaches have good defenses going, but you felt compelled to mention Nick's...hmm...obsessed?

A popular misconception is that you should play a 3-4 if you have great LBs and a 4-3 if you have great D-linemne. I think the opposite is true, because it's much easier to play LB in a 3-4, and it's much easier to play DL in a 4-3.
