The punter and gunners had carte blanche to take that play if it was available. Arizona State went all out on the rush, and they took it. IIRC Les said afterwards that, while they had the green light, he hadn't anticipated doing it out of his own end zone.
This. Miles would not have called the play given the chance.

Dude, if that is the scheme implemented by the coaches, it's on Les...he did "call" the play. That is the only way to interpret it.
Let's not pretend that the punt team huddled on the sidelines and Les Miles said, "Hey guys, let's run the fake here. They'll never suspect it."
Some could claim that it may have been poor coaching on LSU's part by not clearly stating during practice, "Hey guys, we will NOT run check to a fake punt from our own endzone."
But I'm not saying that.

He puts way more trust in his players than most coaches do.
Uuuhhhh..... Hhhhhmmmmm.....
I think it may have been a little more it was les' first game and the players made an on the field call that they probably don't have a green light for since. It's been nine years and we haven't run any fakes from our endzone since.
I firmly believe les was like, "oh shite... Okay that worked but make sure they don't do that again."
