2006 team was better than both 03 and 07.
but, to answer your question, I think that next year we will be more compatible to those two teams.

2003: much better defense
2007: better offense but maybe not by as a large a margin.
I know this started just as a question about talent but did the 2007 offense have all that much more talent than 2003? Gotta give some credit there to the OC for how much more productive the 2007 O was.

Are you retarted? In 2003, we lost to underdog Florida 16-9!!!!!!!!!!!! In 2007, we lost two overtime games, simply because Glenn Dorsey was injured.
I'll type slowly so you can follow, kiddo. First of all, Dorsey was NOT injured for the Kentucky game.
Second, the fact that LSU lost only one game in 2003, albeit to an underdog, is actually an argument for 2003 being better than 2007, because as you go on to mention, the 2007 team lost TWICE, both also to underdogs. And while Dorsey was in fact slowed against Arkansas, he did play. And I fail to see how a healthy Dorsey.....
Aw shite. Really, what's the use?

Comparing 2003 and 07 is crazy. That 03 team was the best LSU ever had. They would have beaten 07 by 4 TD's because you could not score on the 03's. Those two teams arent even in the same area code talent wise.

03 and 06 are a wash in my opinion.

Line by line ( 4 deep at CB, 3 at S ):
03 Dline: Spears, Hill, Lavalais, Williams
03 LBers: Turner, Alexander, Vaughn
03 CBs: Webster, Daniels, Prude, Gay
03 Ss: Landry, Hunt, Daniels
07 Dline: T Jackson, Pittman, Dorsey, RJF ( even though he didn't play but two games )
07 LBers: Beckwith, Highsmith, Cutrera
07 CBs: C Jackson, Zenon, Eugene, Hawkins
07 Ss: Steltz, Taylor, C Jones ( or Coleman - take your pick )
09 Dline?: Alem, Aghayere, Alexander, Woods
09 LBers?: Riley, Coleman, Cutrera ( or Sheppard )
09 CBs?: Peterson, Eugene, Hawkins, ?
09 Ss?: C Jones, Brooks, Loston
Toughest call is the Dline, which I have to give the edge to the 03 unit over 07's. 03 LBers were a better unit than 07's. 03 CBs are easily better than 07's. I have to give the nod to 03's safetys over 07's as well ( C Jones may become elite, but he was green in 07 ). So in total, its easily, 03's D over 07's, talent-wise.
Now this upcoming year? Hmmm... my guesses would be ( compared to 07 team ):
07 Dline > 09 - no real reason to think otherwise here.
09 LBers > 07? - I don't like Cutrera, Beckwith was hit & miss, and Ali would do something awesome then over pursue or something like that. I really like Riley, Coleman is a Chavis special, and Sheppard just continues to make plays when he gets a chance to.
07 CBs == 09 possibly? - 07 had two good starters, an ok nickel and a green dime back. Depending on how they pan out, Peterson could be very good & Eugene and Hawkins should only improve. Who's the dime?
Maybe, just maybe, 09 S > 07? Steltz rocked, but Taylor was, well, Taylor, and Chad was green in 07. If they live up to their billing, Chad & Loston could be a fearsome pair in 09.
Big thing though is, while I know folks love him, Chavis >>> Pelini. My one prediction - 2009 will be the start of defensive goodness for a long time ( hopefully ) at LSU.

does the 2009 talent level come close to 2003 defensively?,

I'm really excited to see what Cooper does with our secondary. I think he is going to be just as great of a hire as Chavis.

In 2003, we didnt lose in overtime. AND Glenn Dorsey was slowed at the Arkansas Game. AND again we LOST IN OVERTIME!!!!

To significantly inferior teams. Florida 03 >>>Arkansas 07 + Kentucky 07

Florida wasnt even rated when they beat us in 2003. At least Kentucky was rated #15.

Im serious Florida wasnt "ranked."
Posted on 5/27/09 at 11:25 am to lsu1ndanation
Valid point, but what did the respective teams finish the season ranked? I know UF lost 4, then the bowl game to IOWA...cant remember what bowl Ark went to in 07.
Posted on 5/27/09 at 11:28 am to Brown Mountain
Arkansas lost the cotton bowl to Missouri with a rank of 24 and Kentucky won the Music City Bowl unranked over Florida State.
