LSU 7
Vandy 6

I bought the game on TigerVision but, per the usual, TigerVision didn't work on TCI in Denham Springs, so I had to listen to the game on WJBO.

LSU went up 7-0, Cecil "the Diesel" Collins broke his ankle on the astroturf in Nashville, and the score remained 7-0 into the final seconds of the game. In those final seconds, Vandy found a way to get in the endzone and make it a 7-6 game.

Vanderbilt's Woody Widenhoffer decided to go for two and when the game right then and there. There was a school of thought in the mid-90s that if you are going for two, you have a better chance to convert from eight yards out instead of three, so Vandy decided to take a delay of game penalty, backing them up to the eight yard line.

Vandy, through all the excitement and emotion of winning the game via the two point conversion, lost count of the play clock and incurred a second delay of game penalty, backing them up to the 13 yard line.

The school of thought was now that, since you are at the 13 yard line instead of the 8, you had a better chance of kicking an extra point and winning in overtime as opposed to converting via a two-point conversion from the 13. So Vandy lines up to kick the now 30-yard extra-point, and big #98 Arnold Miller does what he did better than any other LSU Tiger in school history, block an extra point.

LSU wins in thrilling (and mediocre) fashion, 7-6.

Was there, I think this was the first student government organized road game bus trip. 10-12 buses left Tiger Stadium parking lot at maybe 8pm Friday night, rode all night and arrived early in the morning.

Do these bus trips still happen?

What an absolute embarrassment

I remember the block to seal the win, but I didn't remember that Vandy wanted to go for 2 initially. I also remember listing to Vandy drive for the (what was thought to be) game tying TD and thinking "I can't believe we're going to let Vandy potentially win this fricking game."

Also, you're right about Arnold Miller. He blocked a ton of FG's/XP's at LSU (or at least it seemed like he did). I never understood why LSU can't take a 6'5 or 6'6 TE/WR/DE and line them up in the middle to try to block kicks like Miller did. Miller was only 6'3. You're telling me that if LSU absolutely had to have a blocked kick they couldn't put a 6'4 guy like Drake Davis in the middle of the FG defensive formation? The guy can jump damn near 4 ft in the air! With his arms extended you're looking at 11 ft of lift needed in 7 yards to clear Davis

I wasn't exactly confident in that LSU team's chances, now with Collins done for the year, against #1 Florida coming in to Tiger Stadium the next week.....
