Lots of myths about the 1969 team. First of all, the highest that team was ever ranked in that season was8th, which the '68 team accomplished as well. That's not to say they weren't outstanding, in fact Las Vegas had LSU only behind Ohio State and Texas as the best teams.

Remember the bowl culture was different, too. Big 10 and then Pac 8 were tied to the Rose. SWC champion was tied to the Cotton. Orange and Big 8 had an arrangement of sorts, but not binding.

Also the 1969 season had ranked teams that were a who's who of that decade, Southern Cal, Ohio State, Texas, Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee, Arkansas and LSU. In early November of 1969, the Sugar Bowl offered LSU a bid but LSU turned it down hoping to play Texas in the Cotton. Penn State had already turned down the Cotton so LSU and the Cotton indeed had talks.

Notre Dame had been seriously considering going to bowls for years. They decided to go to bowls again to help fund minority scholarships and women's sports. The Cotton then picked Notre Dame over LSU. LSU went back to the Sugar and the Sugar said "sorry" that they had chosen Ole Miss.LSU tried to persuade the Sugar into a rematch like in 1960.The Sugar declined wanting the Texas-Arkansas loser.

The Astro-Bluebonnet and Sun Bowls offered LSU and invitation, but LSU declined. One thing people need to understand, is with the loss to Ole Miss even if LSU had played and beaten Texas in the Cotton Bowl, LSU would not have won the AP National Title. Southern Cal or Penn State would have.

Thanks for the true history, did not know that.

LSU was never offered the Sugar Bowl bid, as the Sugar picked Ole Miss over LSU in 1969, before the end of Nov.

Also, it took Charley Mac many years to figure out how to defend against the wishbone. Alabama adopted it in 1971 or 1972, and we didn't learn how to stop it

The 1971 team did a good job in keeping Bryant's wishbone in check, although they lost 7-14. In 1972 Mac's defense imploded as Bryant mixed it up with big plays, unexpected long passes.

I'm not sure that it was bad coaching or lack of quality personnel in the defensive backfield. In 1972 they no longer had Tommy Casanova.

I am TELLIN YA that the 1969 LSU team would have STOPPED Texas.

It was ND's decision, but not their fault. Fault lies with those who chose ND over LSU.

...that was the last minute Notre Dame decided to do Bowls year , wasn't it ? Screwed LSU as i recall ...

I would have had no problem with ND if they would have changed their bowl policy before the season started. Or, even if they announced mid way through the season. But no they waited until a lot of the deals had been made. I hold a grudge to this day.

they were the ones that really got screwed

If I remember right, tOSU got shafted also. Their only loss was to Michigan for the Big10 title. Big 10 only allowed its champ to go to a bowl back then. The two best teams in the country that year probably both sat home.

ND's schedule has ranked 39th in the nation that year.

LSU's schedule has been ranked 51st.

In terms of playing ranked teams:

Notre Dame's most impressive regular season showing was a tie against #3 USC (final AP)

LSU's best regular season showing was losing by 3 points to #8 Mississippi.
