I know we haven’t talked about having needs here and we have other needs, but with Ika and Jenkins leaving we could be low on depth. It leaves us with Roy, Smith, Guillory, Evans and Taylor. Maybe we can hold on to Ferrel or Logan, but that’s a long shot. 5 is not enough. Could Cherry or Fonua move inside?

Joe Evans is another one.

I’m of the opinion we need at least one more, but what do I know? 5 is not enough, especially with the fast paced offenses of today.

I’d rather take an experienced DT even if it’s only for 1 year, seeing how all DT’s are FR or SO’s. If u take another FR, chances of a transfer is greater IMO

Unless we want 7 linebackers manning seven spots, we need lbs.

Truth is, ncaa may have tk have a one year lax on transfer rules.

We got hammered and it’s not safe to have 68 scholarship players while others have around 85.

Cherry def looks like a guy that could move inside to me. He was 280 at the beginning of last season. I'm really hoping he has a coming out year

I don’t think it is the ncaa’s problem that LSU can’t keep juniors that project in the 5th+ round to stay for this senior year (every year)

Exactly. There is no NCAA relief coming, with the exception that seniors who return won’t count against the 85.

I don't think we need to go to the portal. We also have Fonua and Cherry, as you pointed out. Those guys can be used if we have injuries or the defense is getting gassed. In addition, Bryce Langston can move inside. He is a horse.

We are only trying to fill two positions. We have five guys, and Taylor is the only one we have any doubts about.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the NCAA offers a one-time 1 or 2 take exception this year. They are about to enable one-time waivers and the portal is already jammed with players. This would help some of them find landing spots and clear some of the backlog.

I saw 53 making some hustle plays against Ole Miss. I'm not as worried about Dline as much as what i am OL.

you need DE more than you need DT -- Roy, Guillory, Joseph Evans, Eric Taylor, Maason Smith and I think Farrell or Logan will return.

If Gaye and Anthony both leave for the NFL, your starting DEs are 230 pound Ojulari and Soni Fonua. Backed up by Jerrell Cherry, who has been passed up by everyone, and freshmen.

Defensive end is a major fricking concern.

I'd assume Gaye is more of a risk at this point over Anthony?

I actually think you have a better shot of keeping Gaye than Anthony.

Anthony is what he is. He's been here four years; has his degree; had a mini breakout year. He's not overly big. He's not overly twitchy. He is what he is. He'll go 6th or 7th round and make a practice squad either in the 2021 draft or the 2022 draft.

Now Ali Gaye can improve his draft stock by 50 picks if he returns to school and improves. And he can make some serious change with a monster year.

I'd think the concern is if Anthony just still wants to be in college, he would turn 25 towards the end of next season.

Would be big to get him and Gaye back though.

What about Webb? He should be a good DE. I think Gaye will come back next year

that's what I'm saying. You have freshmen and Ojulari and Fonua. That's it.

Guys we've never seen play before.

If you lose Gaye and Anthony, I think LSU has to think long and hard about Jermaine Johnson as a one-year stopgap -- 4 sacks in 6 games this year for UGA

3 year players leaving is not what is causing this problem. With the 85/25, you need scholarship players to stay an average of 3.4 years. 3.3 if you want a few walkons to get ships. 3.2 would maintain 80. So a player only staying 3 years is not really a huge drag on the average.

What does have an impact are the 1 and 2 yr only players. Grad transfers, the 1 or 2 yr JC guy, the discipline transfer, the bust transfer, transfers due to change in philosophy like on the offensive and defensive lines, etc. Most, but not all, are due to decisions that the staff made and these are the consequences. The covid opt-outs has exacerbated things, but it's probably a one year thing.

While it wasn't a stated reason, including transfers in the 25 placed a governor on movement. As far as the backlog is considered, no one is guaranteed a scholarship. This is just opening up more opportunity. Also, I would bet the majority of those in the pool would be welcomed to return.

They are already struggling with how to get teams back under 85 over the next couple years due to the free Covid year.

I doubt they make it harder. I wouldn't be against it, but they should have already announced it if that's something they were even considering.

Players are already transferring and enrolling in schools. If every school got a couple extra, there would be different opportunities opening up that these players are getting as of now.

Also, schools would be recruiting different and offering different if they knew this was coming.

We are in good shape on the DL. The major thing will be convincing Ali Gaye to come back. Anthony would be a bonus, he really finally found his spot as a solid all around 4-3 RDE. He would probably start over Ojulari again next year on early downs unless Ojulari is able to put on 15-20 lbs of solid muscle. Anthony was the much better run defender but BJ was a much more polished pass rusher.
