St. Johns is no doubt the "trending" program in college basketball right now. Playing in NYC in MSG is appealing to 17 year old kids

Already signed nine guys this year.
What happened to the rule of sign max of 5 in one year and max of 8 over two years?

Define failed? He got fired but had 5 sweet 16's in 7 years and when he finally didn't get to the tourney they fired him. UCLA has pretty high standards but what Lavin did there isn't going to get you fired at 99% of colleges. It's pretty hilarious that you disparage Lavin's accomplishments and at the same time vehemently tout Trent's.

god, this board kills me sometimes. Lavin was at fricking ucla on an upswing. I actually buy into lavin and think he is a very good recruiter but he failed at ucla, period. Hence being fired and not getting a job for 6 years.

Gathers might well go to st.johns. There is enough smoke to where id be shocked if he is an lsu tiger but it isnt just because lavin was some wonderchild at ucla. He underachieved there. It is just a better program.

I think it was 6 and 9, but either way, that rule was removed a few years ago. I believe that St. John's had 9 seniors and Dwayne Polee transferred out, so they have 10 open spots for this year. Pretty big transition year for them.

No they weren't they were coming off one of the most famous upsets in tournament history. When Lavin took over the leftover pieces of Harrick's title team was going into their final year. They had to make an immediate makeover when they all left and that's how Lavin got to sign that monster recruiting class with Baron Davis, Earl Watson, and Schea Cotton(never played though). It was similar to what Trent had to do at LSU but obviously UCLA brought in much better talent.

Nobody is saying Lavin was a wonderchild but what he did while "failing" at UCLA was better than many coaches have on their resumes. So it's just ignorant to say he's a failure as a coach just because he got fired. I was primarily responding to Bubba saying " I see no reason he will be better at St. Johns." If he does the exact same and is no better at St. John's he will be a success.

Also, the majority of kids who think it is cool attend college far from home change direction as they get closer to graduation and it becomes more "real". Not to say Gathers is one of those kids or not (because I don't know the family), but the appeal of having family and friends 40 miles down the road is often difficult to pass up.

The brains at St Johns is lead assistant Mike Dunlap. Lavin changed up things from his days at UCLA by hiring very strong assistant coaches. Combining the allure of NYC, Lavin's recruiting and strong assistant coaches will make St Johns a program to reckon with over the next couple years.

Gathers is a backup plan for Arizona in case more highly regarded recruits go elsewhere.

I hope Arizona hiring Joe Pasternack doesn't mess up LSU's Country Day pipeline.

Arizona hired Joe Pasternack for his NorCal connections. Specifically, the Oakland Soldiers. True, Zona is looking at Gathers and Bridgewater but I seriously doubt they will end up in Zona.

In 2012, Arizona is gonna get Grant Jerrett(committed), Brandon Ashley, a center and a guard.

In 2013, Cooper(committed), Chris Thomas, Jabari Byrd and hopefully Aaron Gordon.

The Louisiana kids are fall back plans.

Good. And let's not act like your fall back plan will be sitting idly by while you slow play them.
