To be perfectly honest, quite a few of these warning signs were here last year as well. The current performance of the team should not really be a surprise. It's just that last year's senior class was so dominant that they could compensate for many of the weaknesses. Between the 4 seniors from last year, it was a guaranteed 9.9 on at least 8 routines every week (even with Cannamela limited due to injury). Edney being healthy also contributed another four strong routines weekly. That meant that the other claseses had less pressure, and also didn't have to carry the team. With Edney more limited this year and also struggling a little more, plus losing the senior class, the scores are simply not there. Many of the juniors have hardly put up 9.9s before this, so it is unrealistic to expect them to be able to do so regularly all of a sudden. LSU really exceeded expectations with their final ranking last year, but looking at the trajectory of the other classes and the extent to which the stellar freshman class has been limited due to injury, I think we should have more moderate expectations.

TBH, I don't actually think we need to bring in other girls early. Next year's class is already extremely strong, with multiple-event contributors who have a good balance of difficulty and form. The more important thing is to keep the current girls and incoming freshmen healthy. That includes watering down difficulty where necessary. It increases the mental stress on the girls and also creates more pounding, especially with the tumbling. I wish there would be more creativity in constructing routines. I am also a bit cautious about bringing girls on early. It worked for Kiya, but she seems to be the rare exception. Rau would probably have benefitted from having a full pre-season to get into the hang of college life and polish up her routines. Same with Bailey. My concern is that bringing girls on early to 'get in the routines' may backfire if they come in really not ready. Then we just lose one year of their eligibility for routines which are not as great as they could be.

I don't mean to criticise the girls. They are doing their best in challenging circumstances and we should be really proud of that. Many of them are clearly doing their best even while limited or working through injury - Desiderio, Edney, Kiya. Others have really stepped up to contribute where they can - Durante on vault, Dean all round. It's just not realistic to have the expectations that we have had for the last 4 years where the team has been really strong.

At this point (and this will be unpopular opinion) I almost think we should scrap this year and use more Courtney and Rebecca and less Kiya. I would hate to see kiya ruptute her achilles and not have her at all next year. I know no one will agree but this is my opinion. This way you get more experience and depth for next year and you don't risk permanently injurying Kiya, or Kai. Or even Reaghan or Christina for next year. Sorry don't hate me!

Courtney is someone I would love to see more of on floor. She really illustrates the problems with routine construction though. Her leap sequence is poor, and it is baffling why her first pass is a double tuck and her last is a double pike. Like just why???

I also think they should have dropped the double arabian for Gunter. It never looked comfortable in competition. She would have done much better with a simple double pike, combi pass, double tuck routine.

I think we are in the heart of the season where some routines are what they are and we aren’t going to see significant changes. The only thing I ask for this next offseason is smarter routine construction. I am not saying abandon difficulty. Just be smarter about the elements we put into routines. That would go a long way in maximizing scores. OU ain’t going 198 every week pumping out crazy hard routines. Put elements in routines that your athletes can hit most of the time. Putting things in for the sake of difficulty is not going to be beneficial in the long run. All it does is make routines more taxing and opens the door for deductions.

I think Courtney was planned to have a double Arabian first pass...the double pike was left at the end because that’s where they want it with her ideal passes.

I feel like Kiya will compete some because she has family, friends and her former gym coming to watch with her being from Texas. She seemed excited in her interview to be competing in Texas. I guess it is a wait and see as to what they decide concerning Kiya.

That's true but the championships are in Texas as well. I am sure they will use her on some apparatuses (sp) but hopefully not floor!

I highly doubt Alyona is ready on floor. That will wait till next year most likely.

Alyona may be an option on vault in the post season pending she gets her landings in check, her form is good in the air. She may play a role similar to Priessman in the post season where we throw her out there for the competitions that count. We may need to take that risk. Rau is not a feasible vault at this time.

Whats interesting about Edwards is she is able to run with minimal or no pain but its the impact on landings that has been somewhat harsh. Hopefully things change soon. We are in deep trouble on vault if we can't get her back.

Kai had been training floor more before she had been sick so I was hoping to see her on floor at some point. Thats another potential big score we could need. There are so many moving parts right now, we will need some good luck heading into the end of the year for some things to go our way

I’m hearing rumor that LSU may be interested in picking up Rachel Dickson as a transfer. The question is where would the spot come from? Makes me wonder it Ferrer is not coming back and the LSU staff either knows this or is planning in case that happens.

And speaking of Ferrer. Did we ever get the story on what happened and why she took the year off? I’ve never heard why.

Rachel Dickson? As in Georgia's Rachel Dickson? She wouldn't just take the redshirt year at UGA - surely they could use her?

Interesting, if true.

That would be interesting if it is Georgia's Rachel Dickson. That would mean taking another gymnast with a past Achilles Injury.

LSU already has things in the work with Tori Tatum coming in early possibly.

Things are still up in the air with Caitlin Smith, who is on scholarship and has yet to have a full healthy season in over 5 years.

i was just putting Alyona out there on floor this weekend as the 6th person, if everyone hits. sort of like an exhibition since apparently we don't really like doing those for some reason. DD did say in the video that she has been working on it. I really think Reagan needs a breather. I know Maddie's vault is not great right now, but I'm not sure Sarah will be back until post season if at all and Maddie does seem to be getting a little better every week. I just figure we have good away scores already so we can use a good home score next weekend.
Also I agree with Russian about bringing in these girls early. I really don't think it is a great idea most of the time. You are losing 7 routines next season and if most girls can get healthy and with the class we are bringing in, I really don't see a need. But I am not the coach so I will just couch comment and enjoy the remainder of the season!

I haven’t seen Ferrer so I didn’t realize she lost a lot of weight. Hope she is doing better and good for her for stepping away if it is what was best for her.

Rachel Dickson is officially in the transfer portal. I can confirm that. The LSU part is just speculation based on past history with Jay switching UGA recruits before.

They Brought Rau in for a Hail Mary because we had no depth on vault.

I dont think there is any issue bringing a kid in early, other top programs do so as well. It all comes down to how is their overall health and gymnastics is before coming to LSU. If Tatum is healthy and has a good showing at JO nationals again this year. There would be no issue at all having her come in early.

The harsh reality is we have quite a few routines on this team that are just never going to be consistent 9.9 scorers, you combine that with losing some key routines from Edney and Ruby with already limited depth. Plus Ferrer and maybe even Caitlin Smith might not be available next year. That is two additional scholarship kids not contributing routines. It all adds up.

We will see how it all works out. I would welcome Dickson to LSU.

I would for sure welcome Rachel. I don't know if a lot of girls will be consistent 9.9 scorers with leap series, doubles on the last pass, and double arabians. I think Reagan could be a huge floor scorer (ala Rachel Gowey) if she just did 2 passes. DD just cannot get with the times and take some difficulty out of almost everyone's routines. It is a little maddening as a fan watching everyone else do it but your team.
