I want Cole Carter, OL Miss St., with my 20th round pick.

Dan said he will make his pick ASAP. I think his phone died, so I'll wait til he gets back.

With the 20th round pick, OBUDan selects:
Kyle Long, OL, Oregon
Yes, that's him. Recognize that last name? That's right. LONG. As in HOWIE. Another of Howie's kids, who has turned from his baseball sins, repented and returned to his nasty kick-arse nature playing football. He does throw a 97-MPH fastball. He was a good enough prospect to have a shot at MLB. Impressive. Initially this pick was completely out of my typical range. I don't like JUCOs. I especially don't like JUCOs who have no tape...
BUT, through the beauty of HUDL, I've discovered tape! Sure, it's only 3 plays in 1 game, but god damn if they aren't all awesome. Long has impeccable punch. Big bodied kid, with athleticism good enough for Chip Kelly to say, "he could play DL anywhere in the country." Oh yeah, Kelly also said Long could play this year. I don't know how he slipped through the cracks of the recruiting services or in this draft, but I feel like I've stumbled onto a gem.
With the 21st round pick, OBUDan selects:
Corey Smith, WR, JUCO
Okay, this is the pick I spent this morning asking about. Smith is a really strange case. One I didn't think I had send until GCB mentioned it this morning. When the first Rivals 250 for 2012 came out, Smith was ranked 186. Read through the camp performances, and he repeatedly impressed. Last year, he was third team offense of all Nike camps, behind such average players as Jarvis Landry, Stefon Diggs, etc. Smith went to high school with current OBUDan commit, Jarrod Wilson.
But here's the hitch, in May of 2011, Smith realized he couldn't possibly graduate in time. So, with the help of his coach, the immediately decided to enroll him in JUCO. So Smith spent his senior season at a Grand Rapids Community College. Interestingly, he wound up a teammate of former OBUDan draft pick, Demar Dorsey. Unfortunately, Grand Rapids Community College discontinued their football program. Smith has now transferred to East Mississippi Community College.
All that being said. Smith hosted a ton of offers and had even committed to Tennessee. He's now reopened and will be deciding in December and enrolling in January. Normally this would terrify me and it's certainly risky, but every interview I've read seems he's embracing the challenge. He's said that he now must become a man faster.
SO, after all that, why Smith? Well, I was looking for a slot guy. I have two guys who are both more athlete than WR. Though I've recently discovered camp reviews and tape that suggest Caleb will be a phenomenal WR, and Neal has that Percy Harvin type ability (not as good though), neither true WRs at this point. Smith IS. This kid has remarkable route running ability. His top end speed isn't elite, but he finds separation. He reminds me a bit of Ryan Broyles. Smaller, but just gets open.. over and over and over. He gets in and out of breaks remarkably. He's willing as a blocker. HIs hands are glue. Overall, I think he's an elite talent and I hope he gets his academics worked out so he can live up to that ability.

and we're off...
my next pick is my last piece of my secondary, and as much as I hate Texas I really like high school athletes that are QBs/S,
Aiavion Edwards S
I mean on 1st name alone he's a take, right
Dan, for real, juco guys give you instant reward a chunk of the time

24/7 & Scout like him. But he was definitely under the radar. Especially for having a famous dad and brother in the NFL. Guess I need to start watching tape on Howie Jr!
Posted on 3/15/12 at 10:29 pm to Suntiger
Yeah, I was surprised at how little I heard about him for being the son of a legendary NFL player.

I was pretty drunk when I wrote these last night. Man, I was exuberant.
Posted on 3/16/12 at 9:44 am to OBUDan
Dan, you may need to change Patrick Miller's school affiliation.

Is it a done deal now? What's going on with that? I haven't followed.
Posted on 3/16/12 at 9:59 am to OBUDan
It's really sensitive right now, but it's looking more and more like he's going to end up st LSU.
Posted on 3/16/12 at 10:00 am to GulfCoastBiased
Dang, I hope so. Feel bad for the kid. We kind of did him wrong, and now Auburn.

Has any of this been confirmed yet? I really hated what happened to this kid because of that chest lacking qb.
