What is the reasoning behind this kind of behavior from the coach? I've heard similar stories in the past, and it boggles my mind.
The one truly great benefit of social media is that it allows direct communication so these types of things can't happen anymore.

Yeah, bro. You need to elaborate on this one.
Parents had to be pissed - did they confront the coach and beat the shite out of him? What reasons did he give? You need to finish this story!
