The thread starts with an actual par level, then has bjorn sandvagging for the next page.

What did you expect and can you add your expertise to the op?

You want to play 2020 over again and play 2021 with 54 players?

Nobody wants this. He was explaining why the NCAA would choose not to make any changes. I do believe they have opened Pandora’s box with the 2021 transfer eligibility rule, which might be LSU’s only hope at some relief. But if so, LSU will be the beneficiary of a completely separate shite show that really has nothing to do with our current roster situation.

Scholarship limits exist, first and foremost, to create parity. Meaning any issues (early entrants, transfers for playing time, etc.) that are specific to top programs are not likely to generate any relief. However, if a ton of kids start transferring from lower-tier programs to top programs (basically treating G5 schools like JUCOs), that might generate some action.

“PAR” for QB can’t be above 3. In this day and age, there are proven defections at that position.

How is this going to offer hope when we sign 25 players this year, with the same rules.

25 signees means zero added transfers which is my point.

Even after LSU signs 25, we still may be 11 under our self imposed 81 players. The ncaa using current rules will not allow us to add 10 transfers to get to 81.

No parity when you are playing teams with their 85. All of prior posts sum this up to a T.

Man. I don’t know about that.
You always need a minimum of four to deal with transfers and injuries.

Brennan out, tj rattled, what if max gets hurt? 4 and even 5 allows for you to have a quarterback to be able to know the playbook by his soph year and not have to come in as a true frosh.

Nice post dstone12. THanks for your effort.

I don't understand the in-fighting around here.

81 is the max number of scholarships we will be able to have for the next 2 seasons, I believe. THese are self-impossed sanctions.

THe numbers are what they are. We had waaay too many losses over the last 12 months for us to get close to 81 for the 2021 season.

Unless the NCAA jumps in makes some out-of-character ruling....

LSU will be looking at 70-75 scholarship players for 2021.

85 scholarships -

Gives you a chance to be 2 deep, plus a scout team... which means you should be 3 deep at each position, plus a few red-shirts.

Examples, we play a ton of nickel .. we should have no less than 15 DB's on scholarship.

And an OLine consists of 5... we should have 15 scholarship offensive linemen.

We play a lot of 3 WR sets. We should have 9, or 10 WR on scholarship.

But we won't have those numbers last year. It will take this recruiting class AND the next one to get us to 81.

If we're bringing in great players and they're coached up, we'll be fine.

I have a spreadsheet that I try to track the LSU roster and project for the next couple years. I have more Defensive players than Offensive since you need more substitutions on the DL than the OL in particular. These numbers fluctuate somewhat. LSU's KO guy also backs up the punter and PK.
Sometimes you might have 2 LS like LSU did in 2019 (overlap).
My ideal targets for the 85 player roster (4-3 defense):
Offense : 38
QB: 4
RB: 4
TE: 4 --- includes HB and FB
OL: 15
WR: 11
Defense: 43
DT: 8
DE: 8
LB: 9 -- Key special teams coverage
S: 9 -- Key special teams coverage
CB: 9 -- Key special teams coverage
Special Teams: 4
PK: 1
Punter:1
KO: 1
LS: 1

LSU needs to push hard for some preferred walk-ons that can be given scholarships in 2022. This is what happened with Josh Williams. He did not count against the 25 initial counter limit.

Our Kick Off guy did this as well. He can place kick and punt in a pinch as well. Atkins has certainly earned his scholarship.

Offense 38
Defense 43
St. 4.

I have definitely heard this before where you need more scholarships on defense by about five, than offense.

I’m pretty well on board with this.

I agree. 4 should be the minimum. You could wind up with 3 due to transfer, but you should never plan it out that way.
