Yes, there's always attrition, grades, etc. It will be interesting to see how many Les & Co. go after in 2011. Nine is the smallest Sr. class (scholarship) in recent memory. Patrick Peterson is probably gone so that makes ten. Doubt the Tigers sign more than 20 next year.

Isn't Miles greyshirting some kids this year too?

If the numbers are as low as you say, I can't see a class bigger than 18 prospects.

Luckily this year has a lot of "can't miss" prospects at various positions in Louisiana.

i really think our 2011 class will look somewhat like USC's this year,,quality over quantity with 20 to 22 commits.

No greyshirts this year. Since there are 9 seniors, I bet there will be 19-22 players in the 2011 class. Patrick Peterson is a lock to go pro barring injury, and in the past 3 years, we have had between 7 and 11 players leave the team for a variety of reasons (academics, arrests, medical hardships, transfers, etc).

Well that's why Troy Giddens, Zhamal Thomas, Kyle Anderson, and possibly Jarvis Jones are no longer on the team.

Tranfers and attrition usually allow more signings. I think we get more than 20 for the 2011 class

Who else might jump ship early? No one comes to mind. Anyone else think of anybody?

No, I think that's it. I think LSU has only lost three players to early entry in the past 7 years (JaMarcus, RJF, and Chad Jones), but there are usually some guys who decide to come back to improve their stock like Lafell, Sheppard, Laron Landry, etc.

I bet Peterson is a top 10 pick next year, but I can't think of anyone else who is even on pro radars yet except for the incoming seniors.

If he is not the first CB taken in the draft, I would be shocked.

All the athletic ability in the world + no history of major injuries + great CB mentality = high draft pick.

You can never tell.

But yeah, right now there are no names which stand out.

If someone like Deangelo Peterson blew up I could see him leaving early just because I'm thinking he'll be a workout warrior.

I think they will find a way to get a full class.

Unless someone explodes like Chad Jones this past year then no.

I still don't get the Chad Jones move. I like the guy, but he is a tweener for sure. He repeatedly took horrible angles this year both in coverage and in run support (caused big gains on many occasions). He made some BIG plays, but I don't see him playing in the secondary at the next level. Roy Williams was WAY better at OU, and that type of guy is now extinct. He better beef up and play LB in my opinion.

Overall, it's a good program sign - the attrition rate has been quite high, going back into the previous administration, with chronic problem areas at LB and OL. The rate of attrition has, subjectively, eased off somewhat (coinciding with the RP incident).

While it is naive to expect that attrition can be eliminated, I would rather lose 4 or 5 every year and only sign 20 every year, if that is the alternative to lost 8-10 every year and signing 25 every year.

Every good program should have a decent level of attrition IMO.

It's impossible for any program, any coach to have a 100% accuracy rate on talent evaluation. The players that get on campus and can't hack it should transfer out so that new bodies can be brought in to have a shot. That is a naturally good thing.

Now you obviously don't want absurd amounts of attrition, but a solid amount, as long is it is well dispersed is not a bad thing necessarily.

I agree with this. In a perfect world, every class would have 17 signees. Every player would redshirt, then play special teams and on the scout team as a RSFR, make the 2 or 3 deep chart as a sophomore, be a key backup as a junior and start as a senior.

Every attrition loss is, ultimately a signing day failure (unless it's out of everybody's control, a career ending injury at fall camp, etc.) Therefore, a relatively lower level of attrition (I'd like the number to be 4 per year) is a sign that the players are being evaluated properly, developed properly, managed properly, supervised properly, etc.

But what do I know? The best programs seem to have higher levels of attrition. I still don't like it.

I wrote a long post a couple weeks ago about attrition at LSU and UF. Two of the highest in the SEC (using only data for coaches who have been at their school for 5 years).

LSU and UF had about the same rate, but the difference was what positions it occurred at.
